A good friend of mine at a support meeting this past Tuesday announced he had been in the hosptial recently. He was getting ready for our support meeting last month, and noted "a tar consistency BM" just prior to his RNY. He called the ER, and was told to come in immediately. They scoped him and found ulcers. This guy had been a "poster child" for RNY, doing very well with a 140 pound wt loss in around 8 months post op. His labs were very good, and he was off of all meds. He questioned why he had ulcers. He spent two days in the hosptial on IV's and is now taking Nexium twice daily, and says he feels well. He did comment he was consuming a lot of citrus fruit and tomatoes during these summer months. He also made the comment he had been consuming about a gallon of Crystal Lite Ruby Grapefruit drink. He had commented about whether the Crystal Lite may have been part of the causitive issue, since the "mixing jug" was discolored from making this flavor of Crystal Lite. Would either the large consumption of citrus fruits and tomatoes (acidic food) or the Crystal Lite be the reason for his ulcers? My surgeon's nurse was at the meeting and she asked him a dozen questions with no answers as to the cause of his ulcers? Ideas? He said he had an abdominal pain about a week prior to going to the ER, but the feeling lasted only about an hour, and he thought it was indigestion. But the tar consistency BM he recognized as a major issue, as that was his first indication something was wrong. ?? DAVE
