Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | Didnt know if anyone else has had thisproblem or not?? Went and had a post op appoitment the other day and also some routine blood work done. They wanted to make sure that iron, B12 and etc... were all good. Well they came back fine, but my potassium was low. My regular doctor called me. My surgeons office was out of town at a medical conference so they havent notified me yet. Anyways, the regular docots office told me to try drinking orange juice or eat bannans. My question is....can we drink juices? Wasnt sure if it would be too sweet or surgry and make me have a dumpong episode or not? Does anyone know. I can eat the bananas if I had to, however, Im not a huge fan of bananas. ![]() Thanks for any help on this. Oh and Im about 9 weeks post op at this point. |

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | well the way i keep my potassium in tact cause yes thats another areas some will run deficient is a i put a piece of banana into my protein shakes in the blender. I do this two or three times a week. but being your not a fan of bananas...as far as juice it depends on what kind of juice your referring some are loaded of course with sugar and they would cause a dumping episode but i know early out even 100 percent apple juice had to be deluted with water to avoid troubles. i think you should cut the orange juice with water but im not a fan of orange juice. HUGS and i hope you get this level up! THE lower it gets the harder. A nasty sympom of lo potassium are nasty charlie horses and i dont want you to start getting those at night!

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | Hi. Ive heard of it but dont have that particular deficiency (yet). I would go with the bananas. STAY AWAY from juice its the devil devil devil . There is a STRONG possibilty of dumping even if you cut the juice with water, and then if you cut it, you're not getting the full amount of potassium anyway. I like Lisa's idea and have tried it a few times when the bananas are over ripe. Mushy bananas are not my favorite, so when they get the brown spots on them i put them in my shakes as well. It might be the best way. I mean I am sure there is a supplement for this but why add another pill when you can get it with food?? Right?? I hope all else is well. |

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | Thanks for the advise to you both, Lisa and Kenyar. Can I ask what kind of protein shakes you both do and how you make them? I in the beginning was drinking alot of the Carnation Instant Breakfast drinks (low surgar ones) and then over the last month they have weened me off of them. I actaully just got clearance at my appoitment the other day to eat pretty much whatever.Of coure they want high protein, low carb, and etc... but its kinda wierd. Im actually nervous and afraid to move on. Ive been doin g so well with what Ive been doing so it makes me nervous. but my surgeons office said that is normal to be afraid. I did add some salad and some fruit this weekend and so far so good. But if you could both advise me on what kind of protein shakes you do or how you make them that would be great. Im planning on eating a banana in a little while. Im sipping on my wter right now.. Can you tell Im putting off eating the banana. |

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | Yes definitely is frightening to move on to "just food". I havent tried much yet. The other day I ate some chinese and had a heart attack worrying i would get sick or that i broke a rule instead of just paying attention to my pouch telling me it was ok and to give it more!!! LOL. I still drink shakes tho because I KNOW i dont eat enough to get in the required daily protein. i alternate between unjury (Welcome to the UNJURY Homepage) and isopure(GNC: Vitamins, Supplements, Minerals, Herbs, Sports Nutrition, Diet & Energy and more). unjury is good because they offer unflavored which you can mix in just about anything. Ive even mixed it into pudding, and sometimes soup just to get the extra 20g in for the day. the isoure is just a powder you mix with water (sometimes i use ice to thicken it up) but i think you could get that whey protein powder from walmart or gnc and as long as its lo or no carb and sugar free you will be fine (i think) I kind of use it as a crutch....which i probably shouldnt but being that i am working on getting in ALL the fluids, its kind of keeping me full all day so i dont eat much which is why i still drink shakes/ use protein supplements. I think at this point i am supposed to be shake free...but im gonna finish all the powdered crap i bought lol! waste not want not lol! ...there are also these cereal bar type things that i was thinking about trying. also high protein low carb etc. i forgot what the brand is though. im going to get some tomorrow and i will let you know the name. |

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | Funny thing Kenyar.........I just went grocery shopping today and was checking out the protein bars. My grocery store, Wegmans, does hace a health food section that carries tons of protein bars but I totally forgot to lool there today. Was in a rush. But I did look in the granpla bar isle where they had some thing. Kellogs is suppose to have come out with a protein bar but of course they didnt have it offered at my store. I did see some "south Beach" ones which I may go back and pick up some of those but I have to check the sugars and all the other stuff before I buy them. BBut yes let me know what you find when you go shopping. |

| Super Moderator | Low potassium will cause decrease of muscular tone, which can cause periodic paralysis. Bananas is what will probably work best for you. There are some potassium supplements, too, but it is best if you can get the potassium from food. Here's the link to Shelley/xsmith95's home made protein shake. You use one banana with this shake which is hight in protein as well, so give it a try.
