Default 5-yr Post RnY Surgery-Can't get medical insurance after surgery

Hi:
I live in Texas and I am 5-years post op surgery. Highest weight 555lbs-lost down to 265lbs-leveled out at 335lbs.

I have recently applied for medical insurance for me and my family and have been declined by all carriers. This seems to be an industry-wide problem and have wondered if other indivduals have had the same problem? If so, how was the problem resolved as this is critical to life in general?

Please advise at bailey-young@comcast.net or at this forum.

"Thank you" in advance for your support.

Best regards,
Bailey Young

Edit: Copying the Qs that were in the poll, as the questions were asked in a way that is ineffective as a poll

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Welcome to the board, thank you for joining us.

I have moved this thread to the graduates forum as this thread seems to apply to the further out post ops, rather than those who are within a year or two.

Another thing to note is that your poll questions are not valid, as checking the boxes will only show the number of people who check the boxes. Your Qs are asking for specific answers as in questionnaires. The poll answers will not show up as the kind of answers you are looking for.

As for medical insurance, it might depend on how well you are managing your weight maintenance post op, whether your comorbidiies have been resolved post op, or depend on the various individual provisions of the contract itself.
I know for a fact that CraigT, who hosts this site, and is 11 years post op, is covered by medical insurance and has been throughout this time, and as far as I know I haven't heard from him as having trouble being covered. I do remember his mentioning that the premium for life insurance is higher for WLS people, as they were put in the higher risk group a few years back.

I hope others can help you with information you are looking for.

((((((HUGS)))))) May your journey go well.

This was an interesting question. Doc, I need to re-do my life ins this year - ugh - I was hoping for lower rates since I am so much healthier now. I guess they consider the possible complications as a negative? Ya know, I'm gettin' tired of making lemonade!

Are you applying for insurance on your own? Not through an employer? If you have had group insurance without a gap in coverage, you should be able to get insurance. If you are applying individually, I am not sure.

Individual insurance ...forget it, the best is to get it through group where they have to cover you.

I have other medical issues that are not taken care of by the WLS so I couldn't get life insurance on my own, but have every bit of coverage I could checkmark through my employee, thank God!!

I have also heard of quite a few that have tried to get coverage through individual and some of the insurance people I know have said that it is due to (turn down) long term complications are considered higher, etc...I don't know where that statistic is from frankly!

This is great folks...maybe if we alert people "prior" to surgery we can help a lot of folks understand the process. Keep the information coming in and let me see what can be done to begin fighting the process of corporate insurance.

I have heard that getting insurance for people who have had the surgery is impossible through private means but if you get them through employment you can? I dont know because I have been covered by tricare (military) for the past 12 years

I'm hoping you can get it through employers because I'll be switching jobs later this year. I never even thought twice about it!
