Red face A couple questions on getting back to the basics.

Good Morning All:

I have a couple of questions, because my Doctor never really taught me how to live after WLS.

How much protein should I get a day (I am currently 218)
How much water should I drink a day?
What vitamins are essential?
About how many calories should I be getting 4 years post-op?

When I was approaching my 1 year post-op anniversary I was weighing my foods and journaling everything on FitDay - Free Weight Loss and Diet Journal. It's an awesome site and I have decided to go back to it. I plan to do the 3 day LPT to get rid of the crab monster, but I wanted to do it for 5 or more days? I have to really deal with my head hunger issues. I know that my pouch works because I am often full after a couple of bites, my problem is that I constantly graze on crackers all day.

I also just recently found out that I have become anemic. I asked my doctor if this could be due to WLS, but she didn't think so. My period has gotten a lot heavier recently.

Thanks for reading....

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

The basic requirements for protein is at least 60g per day, the water/liquids 64oz per day, regardless of your weight.
Check out Pouch Rules-Long for some of the things you need to know about how to treat your pouch.

About your anemia.
How are you doing with your supplements. What is your VB12 level and your iron level? You need to have these checked out, and if they are low, then supplement. Yes, your anemia can be related to weight loss surger if VB12 and/or iron is low, but since you say your periods are heavy, the anemia may due to that.

Of course you will want to consult with your bariatric surgeon on his/her rules for basics. My basics included this until I lost 75% of my excess body weight:
600 calories a day
60-80 g protein although I got 80-100 and protein helps you lose quicker
30-45 "good" carbs per day meaning stay away from pasta, rice, bread, simple carbs such as this. Get your good carbs from vegs such as green beans, brocolli, etc
Watch your sugar intake

As for vitamins, I always take Bariatric Advantage multivitamins, Bariatric Advantage iron, BA calcium as these are made for bariatric patients. A recent study showed that regular vitamins are not adequate for the weight loss surgery patient due to our inability to absorb. Also, I take a B12 but you will want to check with your doc about that since you are anemic.

Melinda:

Thanks for the info, I found it very helpful. I wish I found RR a year ago when I started my downward slide. That's okay because it's never to late to gain the proper knowledge.

Thanks again...
