Default Anemia etc. (anyone relate?)

Hello all. I stayed away from this site for awhile so as to not feel guilty about Thanksgiving gluttony . (What a horrible Paradox!).

Anywho, I've had some symptoms for some time now that I really want to do something about. I can't sleep well, I wake up about 4 times a night so I am tired all the time, but at the same time very restless and anxious. I also felt weak frequently even before the sleep problems. I would get a bit shaky and dizzy like I hadn't eaten, and with a cold sweat even just a half hour after a meal. Other times after eating, my heart will start thumping and speed up.

I don't know if the latter has to do with the fact that I had my gallbladder removed and it's just that much harder to digest ANYTHING with fat in it (even chicken), or if everything is related to an overall vitamin deficiency. I take a chewable B12 daily, but other vitamins are just not being absorbed from my food. I am getting more anemic with time instead of less, but shouldn't we stay away from red meat? Is there an Iron pill that we can absorb after WLS? I'd really like to feel better.. and SLEEP!

Is anybody else experiencing similar symptoms?

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Hi, I'm sorry to hear that your not feeling well. You didn't say if your have had recent blood work or are being monitored by a dr. As I understand it, when the surgery bypassed a section of the small inteston it limited our ability to fully absorb vitamins from our food. KbfrmAz posted about this recently: http://www.renewedreflections.com/fo...-counting.html
I eat red meat (filet mignon -its very tender with little fat). I also tend to be low on iron so I take a iron pill daily.

I take chewable iron from Bariatric Advantage. It is the Passion Fruit Flavored 29 mg. The nurse told me to take it in the morning with a small glass of OJ. You have to take iron w/ Vitamin C. I have not had any problems since starting. I am not very good eater.

I think Friendly2 had an issue with anemia at one point. I don't really know how it correlates with the sleep issue, but the shaky and dizzy parts make me wonder about your blood sugar level. Also, the heart palpatations I notice sometimes when I overdo carbs. I think a good lab work up and visit with your doc and/or nutritionist may shed some light on your symptoms. Don't let it go, this trip we're on is about taking care of you ~~ hugs ~~ hope you feel better soon~

1) Have a complete panel done for everything. Blood count, vitamins, minerals, liver and kidney functions etc.
2) Have you kept up religiously with the supplements you were instructed to take since your just out from your surgery? If not, you need to keep up with them.
3) See your dr about this, whether it is your surgeon or your PCP.
4) In regards to iron, if it has gotten too low, you will need some iron IV shots to get it up to the desired level first, and then start on iron pills to keep the level there.
5) You may be having a hard time digesting fat due to your GB being taken out. In this case, stick to low fat.
6) What about fluids, are you getting in enough? Your symptoms may be due in part to dehydration.

There was someone a few months back having problems and it turned out that a lot of stuff were low.
So, I suggest you first get your dr's input and start from there, no guessing game.
((((((HUGS))))) Hope you feel better soon.

I've had my gall baldder out and I do still eat red meats. You just have to try and see what you can eat and what makes you sick.

It sounds like you have several things going on at once. The shaky/dizzy/sweat a half hour after eating sounds like your sugar level is dropping. I forget what it's called (something hypoglycemia), but bascially your body produces insulin to deal with the food you just ate, and you get too much so you end up dropping your levels about a half hour after eating.

Waking up several times: is this because you are hungry? I find I need a snack before bedtime to sleep well. LOL, I used to give my babies a bottle with oatmeal cereal to make them sleep through the night, now I have to do the same for me.

Heart thumping & speeding up - start tracking your carb intake. This is exactly what I do if my carb count is too high. Try eating your protien first, then adding the carbs if you still have room.

You mention taking a B12, but are you taking a multivitamin? How about calcium? I take 2 Flintstone Complete's a day, plus my B12, plus calcium 3 times a day. Yes, we can't absorb as well as before, so you shouldn't take all your vitamins at the same time, but you really must take them!

Thanks for the input, everyon! My blood tests came back with good B12, and Thyroid was ok, but Lower iron again and white blood cells. I'll be adjusting vitamins and diet, and (sighhhhhhh) I have to drink more water.. I hate water.

I am always tired and restless when asleep which makes for a slow day. I was anemic Pre-op and couldnt even come home with the Heparin treatments. I am too, unfortunately, a bad eater, so that doesnt help my sititation either. I am trying to up my water intake and protein too. Wish i could find a better median for myself as well. My labs are good except my cholsterol. Working on that with fishoil. takecare..... Kathy
