As DocSanae suggested, maintainers and those in weight loss mode deal with the scales differently. I always come to the boards as a "maintainer" so I forget about those who are not! LOL... Sorry!

I have been noticing an increase of wls friends who are now taking medications that are causing problems... One friend is having massive migraines and sleeping problems. She is on headache meds, sleep aids (all prescribed by her doctor) and Lexapro for depression. She has noticed a 20 lb regain! Now, I'm not suggesting that every person who takes a certain medication will gain weight. BUT I am saying how important it is to monitor your body and how you react to meds. There might be another better for you. Check with your doctor. Never stop taking a med unless told to do so by the doctor, but consult if you think that it might be causing weight gain.

Another friend of mine is on prednisone for asthma. She has gained back 35 lbs. I took prednisone pre wls days, and it causes a huge increase in appetite (makes you want to eat the house down!) While I'm sure that she has probably consumed too many calories and it caused her gain, the fact is, some meds do cause an increased appetite. Again, monitor your body.

I also gained some weight when I got on Mirena IUD. Then when I got on lexapro, oh my. I became hungry and obsessed with food again. I had to change to wellbutrin and immediately those cravings were gone. I fought hard while taking the lexapro to make it work...

So in part, steroids, anti depressants and sleep aids can cause hunger, obsession with food, which lead to consuming too much and your weight goes up. Also, some meds make it more difficult to lose weight once you have gained....

Just a heads up. We have all worked SO VERY hard to lose our weight. It is somewhat scary that one health issue, one medication, could cause us to get off track or send us down a road of regain.

Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Yes, certain medication increase the appetite.
Drs know well that steroid hormones, BC hormones and antidpressants can cause weight gain through increased appetite. Insulin also causes weight gain through its role in metabolising glucose. Steroids and BC hormones also tamper with metabolism to make your body stock up fat.
As Melinda says, it's dangerous to control dosage of medication on your own, but if you feel that you are having unwanted effects from the medications you have been prescribed, make sure that you talk it over thoroughly with your dr and look for alternate choices if possible, if not, then to adjust the dosage or in case of pain control, be referred to a pain specialist.

Lexapro is evil. Not only did it cause weight gain it utterly killed my sex drive. I'd rather be skinny, depressed and horny than fat happy and celibate...lol

Come to think of it, Celexa is another weight gain culprit. I spent 8 hours a week for 10 months in the gym and lost a measly 14 lbs while on it.

I have PMDD and should be taking something for it but I simply cannot get over the fear that any drugs I take will derail my weight loss and I still have too far to go.

You should talk to your doctor about taking something else... is your doctor gastric friendly? He or she should know what causes weight gain and which do not. I got switched from Lexapro to wellbutrin and I like it a lot. Plus, it does not cause you to be hungry.

Wellbutrin is called the "lovers antidepressant" because it doesn't effect your sex drive! I didn't lose weight on it when I took it to quit smoking, but I didn't gain either. No complaints about the sex drive either!

Melinda, thank you so much for posting this. I am on lexapro too, so after my surgery next week I will check with my doctors to see if I could change to something else. They gave me neupax recently but it makes me incredibly sleepy and I couldn't function well. I'll ask about Wellbutrin.

Yes, Melinda thanks for the heads up. Also Danacain OMG!!! I have been stalled for 3 weeks and about 5 weeks ago I started taking Celexa. My surgeon did not prescribe it to me my regular family doctor did. I go see my surgeon on the 16th of this month. I am sure going to ask him some questions about it. Thanks again guys.

Oh yeah Janice...talk to your bariatric doc because I swear to DOG that Celexa is the reason I didn't lose weight after the birth of my 4th child despite my most valian efforts and what eventually led to my need for surgery. I was able to lose after all three of my kids--never really had a weight problem until I went on Celexa.

I would ask everyone taking celexa or lexapro to look closely at it if you're having problems losing.

Sorry for the double posts. The forum started acting weird and my posts weren't showing up and I thought they weren't getting posted.
