Default Watch Those Scales...

Sorry its been forever since I've been here... life has been so great! I have been busy with a new house project - we bought one and now doing remodel work before moving in late January. It's been a stretch for me, but I am enjoying it very much.

I wanted to share something that happened awhile back. I track my weight on The Daily Plate and also in an Excel spreadsheet at work. So, I noticed some spreading of my hips and some meat on my rear that wasn't there before... and I tried to resolve myself to the fact that at 116 lbs, I was too skinny. Yes I needed to gain some weight, and it was hard to not let it drive me crazy... but still... something just wasn't right.

I noticed that in the month of May, my weight went from the one teens (118, 119) into the 120s. Then again, in August, I noticed it jumped from the 120s to the 130s. I could not seem to shed more than 2 lbs! I tried hard, I watched every calorie, did the liquid protein train, decarbed, you name it. Nothing I did helped me get below 130 lbs.

Then I saw a thread about Lexapro where a postie asked if it caused weight gain. Something in my head was curious... but not one single response said "Yes". They all said "No" and even "I've LOST weight". So as I looked back on my spreadsheets for a year, I asked myself, "What on earth happened in May? What happened in August?" In May, I had Mirena installed. It can cause a little weight gain. OK I am fine with that... after all, it has helped my hormone troubles... BUT in early August, I started on Lexapro. I immediately called the gyn's office where I was told, "YES this is a side effect." I also looked up the medication online where other people who had taken it posted their side effects. Many gained, and once gained, could NOT lose any.

I asked my doctor and got switched to wellbutrin. It has taken my appetite away (whereas Lexapro made me obsessive over food and made me hungry all the time, even when my stomach was full). Immediately, my food obsession/wants went away. I dropped several pounds and for the first time, got below 130!

You might be asking "What is the point?" My point is, make sure you watch those scales... and there is a good valid reason for tracking weight... know your body... listen to it... take note of what types of medical problems you have had, and when you start on new medications.... It is a scary thought that just ONE occurrence of a medical issue could cause us to gain back weight that we worked so hard to get rid of.

Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Melinda, thanks for the heads up. What is the problem if we're not on any medications that could be hindering the weight loss?

I just need some type of structure. I have been losing, regaining, and losing the same 3 or 4 pounds for a few months now. I am so aggravated.

Melinda, I know this sounds stupid but I have never even thought about keeoing track of my daily weight like that. That is such a great idea. I am going to start doing that immediately. Also I noticed you had your surgery at Cenntenial Medical Center in Nashville which is exactly where I had mine on 11/10/2008. My doctor was Dr. Douglas Olsen. You are the first person I have seen post on here from Tennessee.

Exclamation Weigh-in schedules for newbie post ops and maintenance post ops are different!!!

Just a warning here.

If you are still in the rapid losing stage, in other words, within 12-24 months of your surgery, it is BEST NOT TO weigh everyday--you will lose in humps and bumps, hit stalls, have small gains during that time of the month etc, and if you obsess about the scale, that will literally give you emotional ups and downs. Weigh yourself weekly at most, also measure the inches, as the inches will melt away when the scale numbers are stuck, so you need something else other than just scale numbers to keep your spirits up.

Once you have reached goal and in maintenance, then is the time to watch your weight closer than before and track it. If your routine slacks, you may be courting more weight gain than is best for you. (Remember, there will be SOME weight regain, as your body tries to find the balance that is best for you.)

There is a BIG difference in how you deal with the scales as a newbie post op and maintenance post op.

I have been wondering about Zoloft lately. I have been on it for years, and yes my weight did go up after I had been on it for a little while. I see my GP in January and I think I will discuss Wellbutrin with her. I did once before and she didn't want to change since I was doing well emotionally on the Zoloft.
