| UCD Health System & WLS
Has anyone had wls with the UCD Health System? I have Blue Shield CalPers HMO. My doctor sent the referral and a week later they sent me some paperwork to fill out. They do all of their appointments in house, i.e. therapy, nutrition, nurse, etc. They said the doctor would review my paper work and get back to me in a week, if they need more information or further tests.
I have been over weight since I was 13, have been on every diet imaginable! Last week was the straw that broke the camels back. I got on a flight to New York and I could not fit in the seat! I have not flown since 05'. I was 20-30 pounds lighter.
Anyways just looking to see if anyone has had any experience with UCD Health System. So far they have been wonderful and the referral went so quickly.
What I am worried about is that I do not have the associated health problems with being over weight. Though I do have a thyroid problem. Will they still consider me if I have a thyroid problem? Do they consider me a high enough risk to get the surgery?
My BMI is 49.5 and I weigh 305 (my highest ever). I weighed 260 when I got pregnant with my first daughter and 283 with my second daughter.

Welcome to the board, thank you for joining us.
Congratulations on your process going on smoothly.
Your BMI in itself should be good enough.
Also, how well do you sleep. Often, overweight people have sleep apnea without being aware, and sleep apnea is one of the co-morbs that qualify you for weight loss surgery, so that may be worth looking into.
((((((HUGS)))))) May your journey go well.

You sound like you meet the requirements as far as I've learned just from your BMI alone. And no, thyroid shouldn't be a problem as long as it's in good control.
Welcome!

Hi,
You're about the same size as I was. I didn't have any other problems except that I have sleep apnea. I have BC/BS and was approved within 1 month. I started the entire process in mid Jan. 08 and just had my surgery last Monday. Good luck to you.
Angie

Welcome to the boards. Im Vickie. No honey I live in Virginia so I dont have a anwser for you on the health system you have chosen, but there are others here from you part of the country who may have. You being more than 100lbs overweight should do it for you unless your insurance company requires other things to come into play to have it done. That is one way to find out for sure. Call them up and ask if they pay for the surgery and what provisons they have? I surely hope you have no comorbititys but after your put though various test it may show signs of somthing that could help you out to get it approved. Remember sometimes you have to cut alot of red tape to have this surgery done but its all worth it.
Im sorry about your plane ride honey. I know that would have been so embarrasing. We all got to a point in here that deterimed our decision for this surgery. Good luck with everything and keep us updated.

Welcome! I don't have this insurance, but I DO have a thyroid disorder. I had joint and back pain, but no high blood pressure or diabetes. I was approved no problem- the insurance is getting smart......if you don't have a lot of problems now, you will later! Hopefully yours is the same- prevention is becoming cheaper for insurance and they seem to be approving more WLS than ever before. (according to my surgeon)
