Default The Process...am I doing this right so far?

Hi all!
I'm new to this whole process concerning the stepping stones I have to take to see if I qualify for GBS. Currently I'm located in Norfolk, Va and carry Tricare prime as an insurance. I've been battling obesity all my life and have tried many things and joined many clubs with little to no results. I stand at 5'2 and weight 235lbs leaving me with a bmi of 43 , other than having back problems, I'm not aware of any co-morbidities i may have. Although obesity runs in my family as well as heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholestrol, diabetes, cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis. It's been awhile since I've gotten a physical last time was before I left for college and that was 8 years ago and haven't seen a doctor since. I got ahold of tricare prime and asked them questions concerning my policy and was happy to learn that the 6 month supervised diet is not a requirement of theirs, that it is something that varies from to doctor to doctor. I'm in the process of making a appointment with my pcm to get a physical to see if I may qualify for this type of surgery....Am I going about this the right way? Is there anything I am not doing that I should? Any advice is well appericated, I just want to make sure I'm on the right track.

Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Since you contacted your insurance company, you probably should look for a surgeron and attend a seminar and they will help you through the process.

Welcome to the site, look around and ask any questions that you have.

Welcome Missy!

There's lots of info on this site so just browse around. Sounds like you are starting off in the right direction. Go see your primary doctor first and get him/her to recommend you for the bypass surgery - a lot of policies require this. He'll be able to tell you who does the surgery in your area.

The seminar at the surgeon's office will pretty much tell you everything you need to go through. Most of us had to have a sleep test, see a nutritionist and a psychologist, get blood work done, and have an EGD (where they put a scope down your throat and into your stomach to take a look around). I also had to have a pulmonary exam because I smoke, and an EKG to get a baseline heart rhythm.

Good luck on your journey and feel free to ask questions.

Starting with your PCP is best but I know my insurance required me to have at least 2 health problems related to obesity. I had high blood pressure, pre-diabetes, acid reflux & PCOS & fatty liver disease. Also, I had to be over a certain BMI. Good luck!
