I just found out that my insurance will not pay for laproscopic bypass surgery. I am on Medicare, so if anyone knows anything different please let me know. Also, if you have had the open procedure, I would like to know about your experience.

Are you sure you are not confusing lap band with lap bypass surgery? There was a time when the majority of insurance cos didn't pay for lap band surgery, even though they paid for lap bypass.
Open bypass surgeries are rarely done these days unless the recipient has had multiple abdominal surgries in the past which can make it difficult for the surgeon to operate without a full view.
