Default a question about the 6 month doctor supervised weight loss time period

What if you lose weight during this time and your BMI falls under the requirement? Will you be able to go ahead with the surgery or will the insurance company deny you? I have Horizon BCBS of NJ. I am Jennifer by the way! thank you!

Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

I think you would get denied based on the fact that you have proven you can lose weight without surgery.

I asked this question to BCBS AL and they confirmed that the time periods that are established would start over, so if you have to be over a BMI of 35 with co-morbidities and the required period of time is 3 years of being over that BMI and you drop to 34.5 then that time frame would start over. So if you really want the surgery, you do need to beware of where you are BMI wise and your companies requirements so that you don't drop under.

I was afraid of that but I had several med changes at the beginning that added a few pounds so I am well in my BMI range. (would have been nicer to be closer to the limit than farther away though)

I also have BCBS AL and my surgeon told me to in so many words " don't follow the diet exactly as they want" because they didn't want me to lose to much in six months!!! So I played around with the diet found out I was type 2 diabetic, they put me on metformin then the byetta shot and by the time I had surgery I gained over twenty pounds in six months!!!! I hope your journey goes well, best wishes and good luck!!!!!

yvonneiam, I am not familiar with the byetta shot, but my husband started out type 2 diabetic shortly after we were married but is now insulin dependent.

Glad to hear that I am not the only one that started out lower than my final weight being submitted. Not that I would want others to gain, but especially since you have the same insurer it gives me hope that they will approve me.
