Default Aetna Choice POS II

Hello--we have Aetna as our insurance which we just got starting Jan 1, it is under my husband's employer. Before then we had my insurance through work where it was clearly stated on the SPD that weight loss surgery was excluded. When we researched my DH's ins we were hopeful because it stated on the SPD that it was covered. We call the hospital we are using for the surgery after the 1st and give them the new info and a few days later we get notification that weight loss surgery is excluded. How can this be? It is not listed as excluded in the SPD. Could it be a mistake? I plan on calling the insurance company on Monday. Is this a good idea? My heart is breaking for my hubby. We have waited so long and it seems like it will never happen. Thanks so much for listening to my whining.

Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

I have Aetna, I'm not sure if it is the same as far as choice pos II. My surgery was covered but I did read the company that carries the insurance can chose to not cover somethings. I hope there is a mistake and he is covered. Check with HR/ company and see. Good luck!

Thanks, msmonica. We are also hoping that it's a mistake.

That was the only reason I switched health care carriers. I initially asked my PCP thru my HMO for a referral in 2009 and was flat out denied. I switched to Kaiser and it was a long process, but I got the surgery I needed. ((((HUGS))) I hope it works out in your favor.

Good luck. I hope it all gets taken care of. It can be soooooo frustrating. That's like medicare doesn't cover hearing aides. It's just crazy!

I was covered by Aetna at the time of surgery (PPO) as well. I'm not sure I'd trust the hospital to check it out as much as I would the surgeon's office. They really are the experts. Also, you just started this insurance, so it's hard to say if they have their stuff together about your plan this early in the year. I don't know what you've done so far to get ready for the surgery- I'm wondering if the insurance said they wouldn't cover because they want to be "in" on the process? My company just switched to Cigna, which concerns me if I have any complications or something else done or tests, etc for an existing conditions. Not much I can do, I guess. Call the insurance yourself. Good luck!!

Default Thanks.

I called the ins company this morning and I was told that the surgery is excluded . I just wanted to say thank you for the kind words and the encouragement.

We will be saving money in order to get this surgery done and hopefully in a year or so we can start the process unless we wait until I get a job after I graduate from the nursing program I am attending in December 2013.

We are going to call the surgeon's office in order to get an estimate on the cost anyway.

Have a great day!
