Default So how cool is this??

I went for blood work today, my 3 month check up is on 4/14/08. The lab is about 45 minutes away from my house. In the same parking lot is a 'famous shoe' outlet...no brainer there, right. So I'm walking around in the store, it's pretty quite, just me, another woman and the clerk. This other woman looks sooooo familiar. Then I hear her ask the clerk something and I know I've heard her talk before, so I say "I know you...". She says where she works...no. Where she lives...no. Then she says it..."I used to be a lot heavier, I've had gastric bypass". Me too!! So we start comparing notes, she's further out, lost over 100 pounds, but we actually had the same surgeon. The funny part is I didn't meet her at the surgeons office - I saw her at a support group meeting over a month ago - took us a few minutes to figure it all out. So this is all neat, right? But it's not the cool part.
The clerk hears us talking about support group meetings (the lady told me where and when 2 other ones are) and she comes over and asks us what kind of support groups are we talking about - so we start to tell her....
The clerk is a very heavy, very short older lady. She started very slowly to ask us questions, and we told her (nothing to be shy about). Then her questions got a little more specific, so we kept answering her. It was sweet to see her start to feel more confident about asking questions. But this is the part that was amazing - her eyes teared up and she started to confess how unhappy she is, and how hopeless it all seems. We all talked a while, and we wrote some things down for her, the surgeons number, the web site address for here (the other lady didn't know about here, but she probably will soon!), explained how you go to a seminar first, the stages, and of course we both said "don't regret it for one minute!" I don't know if she'll do anything, neither one of us pushed it, we just answered her questions. But this is what I'm feeling, 2 years ago I wasn't for or against bypass surgery, honestly, it was a like a french word to me, didn't mean anything to my brain. So if that's where this woman was, thinking she had no choices, not even comprehending that there are other roads out there, or still at the stage of thinking "Me? Weight loss surgery? I'm not that person..." and you know we were all there at some point...if all we did was give her a mental hug, give her courage to move foward and at least be confident enough to know she has choices, opened that door for her...that's pretty cool!

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

It is always nice to meet someone who is actually interested in the process and that you can possibly help. So many times people are quick to dismiss it or have negative statements. Kudos to you for sharing with her and giving her hope!

I think its wonderful you could help someone with your knowledge about this surgery. Alot of people do have questions about it but they dont know who or even how to ask. Im sure she appreciated everything.

Denise that is so cool. I had a similar experence yesterday but it was my doc who asked about my surgery, said she has lots of women who need it and wanted to know how I got around the red tape the military wraps everything in, when I told her what had to be done she was relieved to find out its not that hard at all...I cant believe you are already 3 months out where did the time go?

That was wonderful!!!
You know, this is definitely a WOW, and a grand WOW at that.
There is soooo much *info*about weight loss surgeries, in the media, the internet, everywhere, but nothing beats being able to talk with and ask people who have had surgery, are actually going through the journey. A lot of people, who when they hear/read about it from a third hand source, they just dismiss it as having nothing to do with them, or don't know where/when/how to ask as you say.
I'm so happy for you that you were able to help someone out, to give her hope that there is some light.
((((((((HUGS)))))))))

That is awesome! Doesnt it feel great when you get to boast to people what you have accomplished when you have spent years trying to hide things?
