Question Introducing myself... and a few questions

Hi, my name is Briar and I am a 24 year old mum to identical twin boys. I have struggled with my weight since I was about 10 years old. My mum had a gastric bypass 27 years ago and came to me a few months ago with the offer of paying for surgery for me.

I have had all my pre op appointments and I will be having a gastric sleeve done in about 8 weeks. I have started to eat healthy and will start some moderate exercise this week.

I have a few questions I forgot to ask my doctor that would appreciate some feedback on. I have 18 month old boys and would like to know how soon other mums were able to pick up their toddlers etc after the op. I know I will be in hospital for 3 days and don't want to risk any leaking. Any idea when it is safe?

I am also dreading the 2 week fast... any tips on coping? Also wondering, I am assuming this is a predominantly American site, any other people from New Zealand around?

Thank you in advance for you help and I look forward to reading everyones advice and stories.

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Hi Briar,

I had a gastric bypass 5 weeks ago and was told no lifting over 30 lbs for at least a month, Just curious you were told you have to fast for 2 weeks?? is that prior or after surgery?? and why?? No clear liquids at first??

Hi there, thank you for responding. Ok well my boys are definitely over 30lbs, it will be hard not to lift them for a month but I guess its a sacrifice I will have to make.

Yes I have to go on a liquid diet for 2 weeks before surgery. 3-4 shakes or soups a day with 1 cup of 'free' vegetables (point free on Weight Watchers) once a day. This is to shrink my liver to make surgery easier. I was told all pre operative patients to this. Maybe its different in my country??

Welcome to the board. When my daughter had her gastric bypass her daughter was 2 1/2 years old. What my daughter did, is that she would sit on the couch or chair and let her daughter crawl onto her lap and she had to be careful when she sat on her lap and explained to her that she has sores in her stomach and she showed her kids the incistions and then they knew to be careful around her. Once her daughter sat on her lap, she sat very still and could not horse around her on her lap. If she did not listen my daughter told her to go off of her lap and could not go on her lap until she would listen to her, to sit still. I think once the kids see the incistions and to telll them that it will hurt if they move around on your lap,the kids understand to be careful. Kids pick up pretty fast. My daughter did that for about a month.

What I did with my protein soups before surgery I would add about 2 T. of salsa to it and that really tasted good. I could not eat the soups anymore becasue they were so boring to me and that is what my nutritionist told me to do to brighten up my soup. If you have the veg. protein soup I would add carb free cream to it and oh was that good also. But I only added like a tablespoon or so to the soup. I was on veg. and protein drinks and soups and I got to eat one protein bar a day. I was on this diet for 3 months before my surgery and my doctor wanted me to lose 40 pounds before surgery well I lost 36 pounds and the doctor said that was great. For about 2 months I could have 3 or 4 ounzes of meat but very lean meat, so I got very creative with the veg. with the limited meat I could use and then I was cut out one protein drink for the meat and then the last few weeks I was strictly on protein drinks and about one cup veg. till surgery.

Hi thanks for replying and your kind thoughts. I am having a gastric sleeve. I originally wanted the lap band but after talking to the doctor think the sleeve suits me and my lifestyle better.

Default Liquid Diet

Hello,

I had lap band on Feb 4., for the 2 weeks prior I was on a liquid protein diet. It was not as bad as I tought that it would be. I found that buying a variety of flavors made it a little easier. I bought chocolate, strawberry and vanilla then rotated them. Hope this helps.
