| Hi Everyone.. I've been reading this forum for days and thought I'd introduce myself. I'm just beginning my journey. I've just made the decision last week to have GBS after years of thinking of it off and on. I knew I wanted children so I held off making a final decision. My children are now 23 months and 3 1/2 years old and I've now made the decision to have the surgery. After years and years.. over 25 years of being obese, I had an epiphany while sitting in church that I was ready for GBS. I called the surgeons office and meet their qualifications for surgery. My insurance will also pay for it if I meet their extra qualifications. I'm just not sure how I'm going to prove I've had at least 6 months of trying to lose weight at some point in my life. I have many times.. twice I've lost 70 lbs.. once when I was in my early 20's and once in early 30's. I'm now in my early 40's. I did WW 1 1/2 years ago and lost some weight but gained it back when my DH went through cancer treatment last summer for lymphoma. I had gotten down to 219, and have now bounced back up to 255. I'm tired, discouraged and am missing out on my young children's lives trying to do this all on my own. I would like to fit in the seats at Disney World when we go for my DD's 5th birthday in a year and a half. I have a ton of questions but dont' know where to start so I guess I'll ask them as I go along. I may see the answers as I read other threads and posts. I have my first seminar with the surgeon set for April 9th. I guess my first question would be.... how long from beginning to surgery was it for you? The woman at the surgeons office said it usually averages 7 months but it's different for individuals. Just wondering if you all experienced the same thing. I know I'm babbling but my brain is on overdrive right now... Thanks if you got this far.....

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | Hi Martha, Welcome to the board. This place is wonderful, the people are very supportive and just great! I haven't had my surgery, I am scheduled for April 9th, but I started this whole process in February. I had my consult on the 22nd (of Feb.) and now I am going through all the testing and misc appointments. I did not have to have a 6 month pre-op diet though. Anyway, good luck on your journey and welcome!

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | Hi Martha. I am glad you decided to join us. This site is full of advice and information as you have already discovered. You might search the insurance threads to see what every one else did to qualify for the 6 months of weightloss. I personally had to see my pcp for 6 consecutive months and follow a supervised diet per say, in order for my insurance to cover it. You may need to call your insurance and ask specifically what they are looking for. Some of them are now accepting Weight Watchers records as long as it was 6 months in a row ending with a total of 7 weigh ins. Good Luck and keep us posted. |

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | Hi Marta and welcome! Just ask away as the questions come to you. Congratulations on your epiphany, the first step in this journy! I went to my surgeons seminar just this past September. I had my surgery January 14, 2008. Sooooo....4 months. I was able to prove I had put at least 6 months into trying to loose weight (duh...like we all aren't trying!) by showing my primary my checking account statements that showed I had attended weight watchers (the year before) for 8 months, had had several years of membership to 'curves' and now had a membership to a new gym (all on my statements..) I also had the opportunity to fill out this paperwork (10 pages) from the surgeon that asked sooooooooooo many qiestions, some of which were about "what have you done to try to loose the weight on your own" and that's where you just spill your guts, diets, atkins, weigh watchers, hoodia... Besides having a letter from your primary to your surgeon on your current BMI and/or co morbidities, showing you are a good candidate. So, pretty much just start the ball rolling, keep asking your Doctors what you need to do. Good luck!

| Super Moderator | Welcome to the board, thank you for joining us. (((((((HUGS))))))) May your journey go well. Jot down whatever Qs that come to your mind, and look them up, here on our board, and other places as well. Ask them at your surgeon's meetings, too. Try to get the chance to talk face to face to people who've had the surgery as well, if you can. No question is too stupid to be asked. You seem to be off to a good start ![]()

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | Welcome Martha, This is a great place and you will finds lots of information here. Where in upstate Ny are you located? My journey took about 9 month before I had the actuall surgery. It was a long journey but oh so worth it. I am 40 years old and it was the best move I have made in my life. I feel so good and I am so glad that I took this route. Try going to your regular doctor and see if they can go back in your file and help you with the documentation. thats what mine did. Best of luck. |

| A new me~ I live in the Rochester Area. I moved here 6 years ago. I have a PCP but I've rarely seen him since I've been here. I did go to him in Feb of '03 to ask him to help me with my weight. He said. "Go to WW's. It's the best program." I think I weighed about 250 at the time. That's all he said in regards to my weight. I think I've been back twice to see him for pink eye and a sinus infection. That's about it. I do have an appt set up to see him on April 16th after my seminar. Before that, I had a doctor in Atlanta, but I rarely saw him also, so there's really no documentation about my weight. Just the fact that I was weighed when I would go and what that weight was. Despite being heavy for so long, my health is extremely good. So I rarely went to the doctor. It's only now that I'm starting to feel the effects of so many years of being heavy. Mainly my hip and knee joints but it's not bad yet. I don't want it to get that way so I'm trying to nip this in the bud.
