| Hi all, Just thought I would post my thoughts as I have probably driven around me potty with them. I am just over three weeks post op and much to my amazement I am actually losing weight - am hoping to my take my first post op photos on Tuesday. My issue (wouldnt say its a problem) is at the moment with what foods to eat. According to my sheet from the hospital I am on week four and all it says with regards as to what to eat ' towards the end of week four you can start to eat stiffer purees like lumpy mash potato, soft pasta and soft white rice. The thing is I am really really fussy and at the moment with the choices I am being given I would rather not eat anything. I know I should be mashing up various veges etc but its such a small amount that I can manage it seems like too much effort for something which I usually dont even end up finishing and throwing away. It says from week 5 I can start to eat normally but I am acutally quite wary of different textures (I hate feeling sick or uncomfortable) but know its bound to happen. Plus I am not sure what a balanced diet is (hence why I ended up the size I was). Also (and I know I deserve a smack on the wrist) I have not been taking my tablest for a couple of days (am meant to have liquid iron, a b12 and a tablet that helps against stomach acid or something). The main upshot is that I am probably not getting the nutrients and vitamins I need which wont help with my energy levels.I know that post op people need to be more aware and look after their bodies but am going through a bit of a cant be bothered phase- has anyone else felt like this?? Anyway i'd better stop rambling now Maya xx |

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | I think almost everyone goes through that first rough spot where you kinda think "why bother' with food. I did, right around 3 weeks. Your not hungry, you don't really feel great after eating and all that 'thinking' about what and when is a chore. It will pass, I promise. I'm 8 weeks now and it's starting to get fun, more choices, things are staying down and I actually feel good after I eat. And things start to make more sense. First off, yes, food should be soft, mushy...but I don't think you should concentrate on mashed potatos and pasta. One, there is no protein, and two, it's ALL carbs, what we actually want to try to limit in our diet. Think about fat free, sugar free pudding made with skim plus milk, dannon lite and fit yogurts, protein shakes. Go online to bariatriceating.com and order some protein drinks, ready made if you just can't think about it yet, or powders to add to skim milk. You have to try to get at least 60 grams of protein in a day, and not much is coming from food, since no way can you eat meat, and all the milk stuff just doesn't cut it - so at this stage almost all of your protein IS coming from shakes and powders. Go to a GNC or a "vitamin shop" and get some protein. Forget about mashed potatos and pasta. Protein: protein shakes, protein water, yogurt, things made w/skim milk....fat free pudding, creamy soups, farina or baby oatmeal cerial. Liquid: keep upping it each day and get as close to 64 ounces as you can...beef/chicken broth, protein water, crystal light, decaf tea. Vitamins: you just have to! And if you are concerned about veggies try V8 - it really is a pleasant suprise (I used to not like it) but it's very tasty when you are so "milked" out. Just start there - and in a week or two you'll feel more confident and move foward a little. Baby food, any food processed in a chopper/food processor. Then you can start to add meats, veggies, fruit..but still...PROTEIN has to be the priority in every meal. You'll be ok, and whenever you need...ask!

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | I absolutely know how you feel about the supplements, especially since I'm eating so much more now I really have to discipline myself to take them. I bought those mashed potatos that are real potatos and just took out a tablespoon or two at a time. I used the Butter Buds on them and they were a mainstay for me as well as the natural applesauce (helps coz you cant drink while eating, also good for BM issues) Focus on your protein first - most important |

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | i think we all go thru some of this early out, it is truesly important to learn how to eat even as early out as you are, make sure you are getting in enough protein and water! as far as the vitamins and such i have never had a problem, i do it right away in the morning, this can be very important, so you do not get deficient in anything, it is all a learning process, and it will get easier along the way, do alot of reading here, there are some very wise ppl here, take care!

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | Hey Maya, sorry it took me a bit, I pop on during lunch at work for a few minutes then have to wait til I get home to sneak in a few more minutes ~ Butter Buds Sprinkles are butter flavor granules no fat, no cholestrol. I just shake some on hot foods for a buttery flavor, also gives a tad bit of salt flavor. it has 5 calories per teaspoon and I get them at the grocery store with the seasonings. I have been instructed to avoid butter, margarine, mayo, most fats, so I use the butter buds as a substitute. As for drinking with your meals, I was instructed not to do this (sometimes it's necessary so you dont choke) so we dont wash our food out too soon. I have heard it affects people by their not staying full long enough (later on) and "assisting" regain of weight. Just thought I'd let you know. |

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | Do you like cottage cheese? I didnt but found a recipe that allowed me to get it down - its in the recipe section - jello salad with cottage cheese. It would help your proteins go down and has a decent amount of protein in it. Early out I made it without nuts or pineapple although you can add those later on. I also eat a lot of pudding made with skim milk and sf jello pudding. Sometimes I add protein powder to the mix to up the protein and help with the flavor. Also, if you use the jello cook pudding you can use the vanilla flavor and beat an egg to add, mix well and cook til done (make sure the egg is cooked). It has a egg custard flavor that I love. Also, pumpkin is yummy - I use the Libby's canned pumpkin and use the recipe on the back using spenda, splenda brown sugar, non fat evaporated milk. Tastes like pumpkin pie but you can pour it into a casserole dish to bake and avoid the extra carbs, calories and fat of the crust. This helps food go down easy to. Well, that's most of my tricks ~ good luck! |

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | I'm 3 wks post op myself and am eating a variety of foods. I can do canned meats, very soft meats made in a crockpot, fish and pattes. I can also do the rice, pasta, mashed potatoes, mashed veggies, etc. I have found that eating the liquids, pasta, potatoes, etc do me no good. I am lucky and can keep the meats/fish down easily. so each of my meals focuses on a high protein food with no carbs. I also love fat free refried beans. I also do 12 oz of protein drink that gives me 50grams of protein, so I only have to get 10-20 more grams in with food. I am also allowed crunchy things like melba toast, very toasted bread, triscuits, beef jerky ( I know this is weird and I was leary, but it tastes good and easy to chew and digest), so I will make things like egg salad with mustard and fat free mayo, canned chicken with cheese and salsa heated up, canned chicken with ff mayo, refried beans and 2 tortilla chips, and wendy's chili, . I also do high protein puddings and yogart. These are my staples for now and am looking for some new creative things for the next few weeks until I am released to a regular diet. I find pasta makes me sick, so I don't eat it. Rice is fine, I try for brown rice though, not white, I don't eat it often. I am also allowed soft fruits, I had a few bites of bananna the other day, but I'm still a little leary of dumping from too much fruit. Plus I have so much protein to eat that I don't have the room right now for many fruits or veggies...that will come in time. finding things to eat is tricky, good luck. I've been looking at the recipe section and trying to get some ideas. I'm an unlucky one though, I do get hungry so finding food that is satisfying is important to me, that way I don't dwell on it.
