Default Make some room, everyone

I had a New Patient visit with my new doctor the other day, and when I had to turn sideways to walk through his door, it was obvious the direction our conversation would go. I am 31, 6'1, and 445#. I've been a paramedic (and instructor) for over 10 years, and an EMT for 4 years before that, and am having to say goodbye to that life because I can't safely rely on myself to be able to rescue anyone from tight or high spots any more. My knees are a wreck. I don't fit on airplane seats any more, and even most cars are a tight squeeze.

The good news is that I am not diabetic or hypertensive, have no cardiac history, and my cholesterol is a surprising 219 (a bit high, but come on, who expected that low a number?).

So, my doctor has ordered me to lose 30-40 pounds in 2 months (which I can do, but then I'll plateau like usual). Then he'll try the medication route, but came right out and said it's going to require surgery, which I had already told my wife would be the end result.

Here's a question... since I'm in the ever encouraging "super obese" category, is there anyone who started at the ~450# mark who has had great success with the surgery? Is 200# a totally unrealistic goal? I am very strong, and so less than 200 would probably not look very good on my frame. I'm willing and able to be totally compliant with orders, but if I'm going to go through all of this, I hope it's not just to end up 300# in the end.

Anyway, that's my intro. It'll be a while before I get to the surgery stage, I suspect, but I'll drop an occasional post along the way.

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Wecome! I was also in the super obese category with a BMI over 50. It's working for me so far and I feel great! You can do it!

Welcome to the board, thank for joining us.
Yes, there are some people who were over 400 when they started. Most of them aren't around regularly, I admit, but still, they do exist.
Right now, up in the B/A pics banner is Phatroll92 (641-> 288) (the pics rotate, so you probably won't be able to see it) then there's Botzz who's trying non-op. Check out the Non Op forum, and read all the threads started by him, they may give you ideas. His personal blog is good, too.
Also do a lot of search and research, both here and elsewhere.

((((((HUGS)))))) May your journey go well.

the doc who did my surgery was one who only did the 'heavy weights' I was considered for him a fairly lightweight with a BMI of 55+ go figure!

I don't think a loss of 200 lbs in unrealistic, it's amazing how much people lose with this surgery. It DOES work and it still, like everything takes time and patient with ourselves. :-)

Welcome to the group!

Bree, I'm surpirsed you didn't tell our new medic that you're in the business.

Hi Medic! Volunteer paramedic from Virginia here, 18 years volunteering, can you believe it? Welcome to the boards and good luck on your journey.

There are lots of before and after pics of the guys and they have lost hugh numbers! When Dave checks in I'm sure he'll tell you that it's doable. I forget how much he's lost but I'm thinking it was over 200.

It's a rough journey down this road, but sooooo worth it. I feel so much better and I can do things again without losing my breath. I would do it all over again in a heartbeat. Stick around, read some of the posts, ask questions. Best of luck!
Barb

Ahoy medic, DocSanae pointed me in the direction of your thread with a comment in one of my threads as well has given me some sound advice concerning my weight loss since starting, and I see she plugged me in this thread too I started out at around 534lbs on Jan 1st and as of this mornings weigh in I am 473lbs, you asked about success with surgery, but since I am not getting a surgery I can only offer opinions on what has worked for me so far non op. I have to say that its amazing what one can do when faced with something that he does not want. a surgery in my case. if you would like to know exactly what I do for my losses each week feel free to pick my mind or read through my blog, in the blog is everything I have eaten since starting on this trip, along with what I do for exercise, and updated weekly with the loss for each week. so far I can say that I have been wonderfully successful taking this route. the way I looked at it is, if I get a surgery I have to follow a low calorie/exercise plan, so why can't I do that without a surgery? and thats how I started.

If you ever need/want to ask me something thats not answered in my blog or threads please ask. I am finding that a few people are getting results from reading my progress and using that as motivation, and that is cool that someone can find something they need in something I do for accountability. I wish you good luck on whichever path you choose to walk down.

As Ever
Me
