Default Hi everyone, I'm new!

I just went to the group meeting at the surgeons office last night. I am so excited that my hubby works for a company whos insurance has this rider!! But the hard part tho is that I have to go on a doctor supervised diet for 6 months before I can have the surgery. Any advice from anyone? This is going to be a long 6 months!

Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

make sure before you do the 6 month thing to ask if there is a minimum or expected weight loss during that period. My surgeon's office acted like it was no big deal, but I've seen others around here who posted they went through it, then were denied because they didn't lose the required weight in that time period. It makes no sense to me...if you don't lose weight, you obviously need surgical help. If you do lose the weight in 6 months, why surgery....right????

Welcome aboard...we are glad you're here!

Welcome! You have found a great place for support and advice! I had to lose weight for my ins and docs office, but they do a medifast diet for a determinate # of weeks pre-op, so I didn't have to do it myself over 6 months. It was just a different method, but boy did it work! I lost 40 lbs in 6 weeks! Good luck in what ever you decide. And take Kath's advice and see (also from your ins company) if there is a # or % requirement.

Hello. Welcome to the boards. Im Vickie. First of all its WONDERFUL that your hubbys company offers that rider. They should be congradulated on that! Do you know how rare that is? We all have to do the red tape thing with insurance companys to get surgerys paid for. Its well worth it.

Do yourself a favor and call the insurance company and ask what the criteria is to have this done. Write it down. Make sure you follow it and you should be fine.

With my insurance I had to be on a drs supervised diet for 1 year. But still had to be 100 lbs over weight before they would aprove the surgery. Be sure to get a list from the insurance and know what you have to do. Good luck and it really does fly by.

Yes, once you have a mind set to have the surgery it's hard to sit and wait but it does go by fast while you start to do all the prerequisites. Take this time to read and research all the aspects of this journey, do all the steps required by the insurance company and your Doctors...it will fly by and you will be completely ready.

Welcome to the board, thank you for joining us.
Looks like you are off to a good start.
Since you have 6 months to do the pre op diet, I hope you'll spend that time doing a lot of searching and researching and reading to prepare yourself as well as possible for this journey.
((((((((HUGS))))))) May your journey go well.
