Default Psyc evaluation

Hi everyone,

I've just completed my 6 month sup diet with the doctor and had all my tests and blood work done for my insurance to approve my surgery. Now my last hoop to jump through is the psyc evaluation. Its just one appointment but does anyone know why we do this? Is it just to make sure we are in the right mind set or can they actually deny our surgeries?? I'm scared of saying the wrong thing but I know I'm doing this for all the right reasons so I'm sure I have nothing to worry about... right?

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

I was just asked all kinds of questions about my past problems with weight and how I got to be where I am today, sitting in her office. Just be honest. I was also scared, so thats why I fully researched wls.

I think if you were doing it for the wrong reasons, then maybe they could deny? I could be wrong.

Im sure you will be absolutely fine!

I had to answer questions on a computer. There were over 400 of them. They were multiple choice and most didn't seem to be about WLS. But it gave the psycholigist an insight into me. When she told me the results at a later appt, it pegged me to a tee. I wouldn't be too worried, and answer honestly. Like most WLS patients we haven't made this decision lightly and that will come out in the testing.

Hi Jennifer,
I just had my psych evaluation last week. I was extremely nervous, but I was in his office for less than 15 minutes. He asked me a couple questions about the surgery, then he said I seemed like I have done my research and I am ok to have the surgery. I am not sure if everyone's is like this, but mine was very easy... They just want to make sure you understand what you are doing and that you are ready to make a lifelong commitment. No need to worry, you'll do fine!!!

Don't get too worried about it. Mine was very easy and more like a chit chat...I think they just want to make sure that you are doing it for the right reasons (nothing like 'I'm doing it cause my hubby said I'm fat!'....or 'I can't get a date, so i thought I'd try this...') and that you understand that it a life long journey (not 'Well I hope to get all my weight off in 2 months!'). Stuff like that, anything that would send up a red flag that you are not mentally prepared for this or that you are doing it for someone else. He also asked about my relationship with my husband, and again I think it was to make sure that you are not doing it to make a partner happy or love you more...
Just be honest and there is really no reason why you would be denied.

The psych evaluation is done for a purpose. Your surgeon wants to know that you're stable enough to handle the requirements of post op RNY surgery. Diet, vitamins, no sugars, etc. Also they want to check for signs of depression. Depression is something that occurs to a lot of WLS patients. You are now missing your best friend--FOOD. That can cause a deep depression in some people.

this journey is EMOTIONAL...and full of ups/downs....there are people who are NOT prepared for life in general, much less a life-changing surgery like this! The ratio of addiction transfer is high, and they want to make sure you have the capacity to decide the right reasons to do this!

I visited with my psych for about 1/2 hour...then filled out 2 question things....over 600 TRUE/FALSE questions....did I ever think of dying? Do I look forward to drinking every day? etc.....apparently, the way you answer can tell if you are off balance (and I must have fooled them all...LOL)

I wouldn't worry too much about it!!

Like everyone else has mentioned, it is done to see if you know what you are getting into to see if you are stable enough to handle the surgery. It is nothing to worry about, it will go just fine.
