You should talk to a prospective surgeon that does both. Listening to guest surgeons at my 3 support groups, lapband is primarily designed for a 60-80 pound reduction in weight. Your profile states you want to lose 100 pounds. So I don't know if the lapband is the surgery for you. RNY may be a better choice. I have Kaiser insurance and they offer both. But MOST of the clients referred for consultations for lap band end up getting the RNY, according to the staff at my wife's RNY Kaiser doctor. Lapbands are not a real simple operation. Fills are required, and there are many documented instances of band "slippage", which requires another surgery to reseat the band. The RNY has some drawbacks too, but not every patient reacts the same identical way to diet, vitamin absorbtion, dumping, etc. So, I'd consult with a surgeon that does both and rely on his or her judgement.

I am scheduled for bypass, but originally considered lapband. Because of my injuries in an auto accident, I was concerned about the amount of exercise I would need to succeed. My doctor and nutritionist really pushed exercise and intense motivation as necessary for the lapband to work and while at one point in my life that would not have been a problem I became concerned and had decided to go with the bypass. After my doctor got the results from my upper GI and endoscopy, he put the brakes on lapband for me because of my sliding hiatal hernia.
