Default Newbie on the block!

Hello everyone, I've been visiting this sight for quite a while now and reading your incredible stories. Everyone on this site is so positive and so knowledgable- that is a big reason why I decided to post- You all are so inspiring...

I've been having a bit of a hard time with my doctors office. Specifically, the admin staff. I'm lucky to have a surgeon who's reputation is unsurpassed, so from a procedural standpoint- I'm quite comfortable. It took me about 6 months and 2 appeals to finally get approved for this procedure. Not because I didn't meet the requirements, but because the admin. staff lacked providing sufficient ppwk needed to the insurance.

Because of my persistance and speaking to the right people at my insurance company- I've been approved. My insurance company has been amazing and I'm very pleased with my coverage.

I am scheduled for May 5- here is my problem... since I've been approved, I haven't received any information from my doctor's office on what the next step is. ie, pre-op consult, dietician information, hospital eval etc. etc. Finally, I once again took the 1st step and called my doctor's office myself. I spoke to a new staff member at my doctor's office and what he told me was that they were over 1 week behind on calls and letters. Wow, what a great way to do business! I won't get into the details, but I finally got an appt. with my surgeon on 4-29. I had to push for that one.

Given the magnitude of this surgery, I feel so anxious because of the admin. staff. My doctor is great- it's just those guys that are driving me a little batty. On the 29th, I plan on telling my doctor how arduous this whole journey has been for me.

OK (breath) with all that being said, does anyone have any suggestions for me? Specifically, what exactly is done before surgery? Who exactly do you meet with? I want to be educated on this, rather than going in this blind. Please help! I really appreciate it!

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Prior to sugery but after insurance approval:

Had to see a nutrtionist - she gave me handouts and ideas and a minni class on post op nutrition.

Had to see a psychologist - evaluate if you are menatlly ready for this journey - see where your head is - no big deal really.

Sleep apnea test - over night at hospital (if required)

Cardiologist - see how tickers doing, stress test (if required)

Blood work - long list for surgeon

Pre admission at Hospital - fill out paper work, answer questions on health and meds, some blood work.

3 hour seminar just prior to surgery at Dr's office - Doctor, nurse practitioner and nutritionist all made an appearance - go over steps, procedures, question & answer, sign release forms, hand out on what to expect, meds to take, foods and food stages, had to bring hubby (or main care giver) so they know what to expect.

The rest was me getting house, life, business, family ready. Stocking up on what to have once home ie: broths, skim milk, pudding (we can go over all that in another post), what to pack (also another post).

I'm sure others can add if they had different things to have done pre surgery. Hope this helped - ask if you have more questions - and WELCOME!

Denise covered most of it...each surgeon is different...some may require a psych consult....and some want you to stop smoking (if you are a smoker)....others want you on a liquid diet.....the variances are wide spread from surgeon to surgeon....

Congrats on your date...and we're glad you are here!

Since you already have insurance approval that means its pretty much preadmisson stuff you have to deal with now.
Meaning Lab work or any other test such as a EKG or Chest Xray mabye all three. This is just to make sure your healthy enough to have it done on the date that has been set.
He will go over exactly what he is going to do and see if you have questions. Probally sign your paper work for him to do it.

Then be given instructions such as what type of diet you have to be on if any a few days before hand. And then of course instructions on what to eat and when after wards.

Its just regular protocol. It sounds like the office your going to is a very busy one. I think it is wise you let the surgeon know what you have delt with incase you have questions after the surgery so you wont be shuffled around like before.

Welcome to the boards and good luck.

Default Thanks!

Thanks for the reply... I knew I found the right place here!

My doctor's office required me to do most of everything you mentioned prior to surgery scheduling... I had to do the following:
  1. 6 hours of seminars
  2. consult with surgeon
  3. psych eval
  4. 1 week food journal with test for 2 hours of seminars
I just feel that I haven't received all the information I need prior to surgery. I'm the type of person that needs to have everything set. I'm married with 3 children and a f/t job- I need to have a plan- does that make sense? I would like to start preping for the protein shakes I need, vitamins etc. I'm just wondering, will my surgeon give me all the time frames etc. prior to surgery?

Do you think with admin. staff I have had problems with- is that a bad thing post-op?

Thanks again, you guys are amazing!

Also,
some Dr's have patients go on a specific diet before - different lenghts of time, different plans - could be just to drop a few pounds, could be medifast, depends on what Dr. wants. And usually before surgery, at the very least the night before, you have to drink that stuff that cleans you out - and how long you have to fast varies too.

Sorry to hear you had to go through all that. I just got approved and my surgery date is may 6. As far as myself, I had to do everything that Denise mentioned before I was approved. Now I have to go and have lab work done at the hospital and a pre op history and physical this month. As others have mentioned, write down any questions you may have (don't hesitate) this is about you and you need to feel comfortable in every area. Congrats and good luck, you'll do great.

Sorry you're having such a hard time with your docs office. Our need for information and our excitement to get this done gets lost on some people. Hopefully you'll get everything you need in time! Welcome!!
