Question What R My Chances??

I am a 31 year old mother of 3, I have been over weight since I was 21 and I have gone through soooooooo many diets.. My weight has come off and I gain it right back plus more... I So tired of this Yo-Yo effect and it has brought me the the point where I want to have Gastric Bypass Surgery.. I am at 226 lbs right now, I am 5 '2 and I just wanted to know what are my chances of getting approved for this Surgery?? The only medical condition I have is Depression because of my weight and me just not being happy with myself .. Please give me some advise......

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

I found a surgeon and went to a seminar he has every month for interested people. I did not think I had any co-morbidities but I was wrong. My asthma counted, sleep apnea, my bloodwork came back bad for the first time ever, my joints were getting bad, I had acid reflux on top of depression. There are quite a few things that I never thought of that count!

You should attend a seminar...I didn't think I had co-morbidities either, but they can be as simple as joint pain.

I went to a class for this surgery through my Insurance and all they did was try and discourage people from getting this surgery.
But I have to call and report my current weight every week, The Dr said I have to lose 4 pounds before I can get an appt with him... I just feel they might tellme Wow you lost 4 pounds now keep it up and not give me the surgery

No, I think that they want to see your commitment, that is why they want you to try to lose some.

You may have more problems than you think- I thought I had no health issues but my doc pointed out that I had migraines, back pain, and knee pain- all which are worsened by obesity. I was approved no problem- so research and document even the smallest issue. Good luck!

Thumbs up reply

I had a really good doctor, i had seen him a couple of times for weight issues. I eventually approached him about the surgery and he agreed. He gave me the referral. i did not have any medical issues it was more of a preventive issue. (family history, diabetes, heart, ect.) My height 5'6 and weight was 240 lbs. My process was pretty smooth, was approved the first time from my insurance. Biggest problem was paper work kept getting lost from my doctor to surgeons office. I think it all depends on you doctor and insurance. Look into it. Good luck!

Consult the gp you use within your insurance company. He/she should know the rules of that group. The rules vary with almost every company. You may be eligible for the surgery, but it may take 6-8 months to "jump through the hoops" of your insurance company, before the surgery is actually done. Some insurance companies have exclusions to weight loss surgery, so check with your insurance office or your gp.

Welcome to the board, thank you for joining us.

1) Does the policy you have cover weight loss surgery? Confirm this first.

2) The basic criteria that the insurance cos use are the ones set by NIH.
Criteria for wls surgery
Added to the NIH criteria, insurance cos often have other requirements such as documentation of weight for the past 5 years, going through 6 months of supervised weight loss attemps, to name a few. Confirm what your policy requires.

3) What medical conditions are you being treated for now, or are under observation and followed, even if you do not take any medication.

4) One of the most common comorbidities that obese people have, and go unnoticed, is sleep apena. If you have sleep disturbance, don't chock it up to depression, but get checked for sleep apnea. That alone is enough to qualify you along with your weight in most cases.

5) Is your regular dr familiar with weight loss surgeries? Does s/he have other patients who've had surgery? If so, ask you dr what s/he knows and help you go through it as well.

6) Do a lot of search and research, both through this board, and other boards. Arm yourself with information (make sure you have correct information, there are lots of bogus info out in cyberspace) as well as attending seminars sponsored by bariatric surgeons and bariatric centers.

((((((HUGS))))) May your journey go well.
