Default My clinical trial surgery is scheduled!!!!!!!!

I'm SOOOOO freaking happy! I haven't posted in a while... I think the last time was when I was asking for opinions as to whether I should pursue this new clinical trial surgery that I was being offered after being denied by insurance three times. I've since met with the surgeon, shrink, and nutrition person and I now have a surgery date!!!! They just called to schedule pre-op testing today for May 22nd and surgery is June 3rd! I'm super excited!

What I've learned about the surgery... If your stomach starts out as a football, it will be reduced by this surgery to the size of two bananas, so not nearly as small as with gastric bypass. Now to figure out what they do...put the base of your two palms together with your fingers curving up...kind of creating a U of a V...now curve your fingers in, making almost a heart. That's what they'll do with my stomach. They'll suture where the tips of your fingers are...two or three rows and that's how my stomach size is reduced.

Now here's my "problem"...get ready to laugh! Because I was denied surgery I've been working my bum off to lose weight and I got down to 205. That puts me BELOW 40 BMI. I've now been instructed by my surgeon to *GAIN WEIGHT!* What the heck? GAIN WEIGHT? I don't even know how to do that. I'm under pressure to GAIN WEIGHT? It's been 4 days since I was informed of this...and I've only lost one! Ha! At least I can find humor in that.

Anyway...I'm late for work but I wanted to share my happiness! I will only be in the hospital over night. If this becomes a regular surgery after the clinical trial it will actually be OUTPATIENT which shocks me...but will be great for patients as well as insurance companies so hopefully more people will get approved for surgery since the cost will be much less!

Thanks to everyone for their words of encouragement. When I met with the shrink I mentioned you guys and she actually wrote down the website since I spoke so highly of everyone!

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

The gaining of a whopping 5 pounds is only to make sure I'm at 40BMI...otherwise, I'm booted from the program. It's definitely worth it, in my opinion. Besides, I'm on a liquid diet for two days before surgery...so I'll lose it then, if I don't poo it out with the laxative (ha!)

As for the name of the surgery... I've never seen a true name for it other than the study name which is HGVR...so if anyone can figure out what those initials stand for, props to them! I've seen "Reduction gastroplasty" but that apparently refers to any type of stomach reduction for weight loss... Heck...they may not have even named it yet!

Milkshakes...I'll have to try that! I haven't gained a pound yet...grrr! I'm sitting here with my Big Mac. Wish me luck. I don't want to have to be booted from the program over a couple of pounds. Grrr. Thanks for the support!
