Smile I'm a Newbie!

Hi, everyone! I'm thrilled to have found this WONDERFUL resource and support network! I'm scheduled for surgery on July 8, 2008. My journey has gone really fast--I talked with my PCP about the possibility of WLS in late March, attended an informational seminar by my surgeon in April, had lab work done in late April, went to a surgery consultation in May, received insurance approval in late May and was promptly scheduled for surgery! (I was recently diagnosed with fibromyalgia and had already done a lot of the needed tests).

So . . . I'd love to hear your opinions on what I should be doing for the next month (28 days, but who's counting? ) to "get ready"? My dietician suggested that while I didn't need to lose weight, I should start weaning myself off coffee and soda. She also advised me to start drinking protein shakes to get used to them. I have a couple friends who had gastric bypass 4 and 2 years ago, respectively, and both discouraged protein drink consumption prior to surgery because I'll be sick of them by the time I HAVE to drink them. What do you think?

Any other tips?

Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Welcome aboard!!! Wow, your process when really fast! I didn't really "prepare" for surgery as far as drinking shakes and such. I had to go on a 10 day clear liquid diet, so that's the only "prep" I had done. But eating high protein, veggies, fruits sounds like an all around good plan. Good luck and keep us posted!!

Welcome!! I am glad to hear the process was fast for you...not everyone is so lucky!! July will be here before you know it. Like Amina said...don't go out and stock up on things such as protein drinks or shakes. Your taste buds will change. I can't do anything that tastes sweet real or artificial sugars. We are here for you so ask plenty of questions!

WElcome to the boards. My doctor required me to do a 10-day all clear liquid diet before my surgery. It was rough, but I made it. You are going to do great and your surgery date will be here before you know it.

Welcome and congrats on your date. I have to agree with your friends about the protein drinks...do not even worry about them now, your tastes are going to change after surgery and what you like now you may not like after.

Hello and welcome!

I think everyone pretty much covered it already...don't get too crazy with protein drinks before surgery, they are more than enough to take after , and yes, your tastes do change anyway. Think about cutting back on caffine and carbonated drinks somewhat, and like Amina said, don't have to eat like we do, but getting more protein in and less carbs will help. Do however have a few nice meals - even though you will again eventually, don't make yourself feel deprived but also don't eat like it's your last meal .

Thank you all so much for your posts! I think I'll try to replace my coffee and diet soda with water and Crystal Light, and try to get more protein and fewer carbs. I have terrible eating habits (don't like veggies or most fruits; could live on fast food, pizza, etc.) so making small changes now might help me in the long run.

It's so encouraging to read through the forums and see your successes. Gives me a lot of hope and determination that if I follow my surgeon's program and lean on you guys for support, I'll lose the weight I need to be healthy.

Yes, you will do great, and we'll all be here with you. You do get to have caffine again, just in moderation and not at first, so cutting back on that a little should help right after.
As you get closer and have questions, just ask -
