Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | Hello Everyone! I am Michele, and I am new here. My surgery date is in 15 days--on July 8th 2008--and I am equally scared, and ecstatic about it! I went in for my first appointment on April 25th--an all day appointment--and since then, our family has been though my step-daughter getting married, my mother-in-law passing away unexpectedly, and my other step-daughter graduating from college, so to say the least I have been on an emotional roller-coaster. The three life events all happened between April 26th, and May the 10th. After the middle of May-- I began calling the weight loss center to get them moving. I called almost daily, and got them all the information they needed. After they had it-- I kept calling to get it moved to the insurance-- after it reached the insurance... I called every single day, and it took 5 days to approve it (mostly due to a letter I wrote them because I was missing two years of weight history). They told me the letter is what pushed it through so quickly. The day I had verbal approval I called the dr's office, and they scheduled me THAT DAY for my pre-surgery appointment for: July2nd, and my surgery date for July the 8th. They wanted to schedule surgery for July 2nd, but I will have someone in town visiting so I had to postpone for the following week. It was less than two weeks ago that I was scheduled for all of this, but now.... knowing it is so close... I am beginning to get worried about the surgery, and about what could happen in surgery. Mind you-- I am not typically a worrier. I am just not like that, but I worry about complications during surgery. I am still going through with it, but I am a little worried, however, I am also SUPER-EXCITED! I have not been a normal weight since I was in elementary school, and I am 36 now. I am looking at this as an GREAT opportunity, and I am going to exercise as much as my body will allow, and follow my dr's instruction TO THE LETTER. Anyway, I didn't mean for this to be so long... I just wanted to introduce myself, and tell you have I have been looking a round this site for the last couple of days, and this looks to be a very encouraging and informative place for people undergoing the WLS journey. Thank you to all of the wonderful people who are so helpful, and empathetic! Michele "SassyandSpitfire" ![]()

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | Welcome, Michele!! You've come to the right place for WLS support. First off, I think that if you had no concerns going into a major, life-changing surgery, we'd all worry about you! Any time people use you for a pincushion and re-arrange the internals, there are opportunities for uncertainties. You'd have to have ice water flowing in your veins NOT to worry a wee bit. But I get the impression the worries aren't of a paralyzing nature, and you're going to see this through. Good for you!! Second, your attitude is right exactly where it needs to be! The surgery moves things around a bit and creates the opportunity to do amazing things that'll change who you are and how you enjoy life. What makes it work is your mindset, attitude, determination, and endurance. Anyone who tells you that this is the easy way to lose weight is woefully lacking in understanding! When you say that you are going to follow your doc's instructions to the letter, you are showing wisdom. The doc and staff know this procedure and what works far better than you do. You're hiring good people to take over your body and give it a chance for success. The true success is earned by doing what they tell you. No shortcuts, no improvisations, no cheating. Of course, your mileage may vary, and individuals respond differently, but if you give it your best, it will give you the best results. The true weight loss tool is not in your belly, it's in your brain! Sounds like you've done the research. Learn all you can pre-op. The liquid diet you go on for a time before surgery is very similar to what you'll be on for awhile post-op. It's a good idea to work with it and get used to what it involves, because once you wake up, your options are greatly limited!! Your body will enforce obedience, so prepare in advance to behave. I got a personal chopper/puree/blender machine and learned how to use it before my surgery. It was a life-saver!! When you hit the puree stage, it lets you puree real food. The texture is still missing, but the flavor is there, and it's almost like eating. That was a good investment. You'll find them in the small kitchen appliance section at Wal-Mart. One important thing you may want to consider, and have a support set up in advance. You have been through some major stresses in the recent past, and this surgery is also a major stress on the body. Many people who are in our situation with out-of-control weight have an addiction to food. Addictions are a means of coping with stress, whether it's tobacco, booze, food, sex, or other normal behaviors taken to extremes. Many here have noted that they have transferred a food addiction to something else as a means of coping with stress, and then had to deal with that problem. If you look at a stress measurement scale, you've probably gotten your full share for the year in the last couple of months, and you're going to inflict another major dose in a couple of weeks. If this applies to you or you think it may, it would be a good idea to have some form of medical help on standby, whether it be your PCP or a psychologist or whatever. There are challenges to this route, but I haven't heard too many folks here say they wouldn't do it again if they had the chance for a do-over. Being prepared is a good way to make it as smooth as possible. This is a chance to completely alter your life. It's a wild ride, full of excitement, frustration, love, rejection, and great health! Your new friends and family here are ready to help you through it from the start, so don't be afraid to ask. We even have an entire forum devoted to Stupid Questions, so nothing is out of topic. You are not expected to know it all. None of us do, either, but someone here knows the answer you're looking for. Enjoy!! CT
