Default 5 months after surgery

Hi my name is fernando and i had gastric bypass surgery 5 months ago in march, and so far ive lost 120 lbs. Im not sure if this amount of weight loss is normal for such a short time but it seems like allot to me,I had the surgery performed in mexico through a clinic called "obesity goodbye" and i still cannot hold down or eat any more than a few bites of solid food.Everytime i try to eat anything like meat, bread, rice etc.I immediatly will throw up, allthough its been 5 months im still pretty much only eating oatmeal, mashed potatoes, soups, refried beans, etc. and I dont know if i should start worrying,I am also concerned about how fast i am losing weight.my goal has always been to lose 130 lbs.,but i never expected to lose that in only 5 months!! am i going to continue losing weight at this rate?am i going to have to try and stop losing weight by forcing myself to consume more calories?how will I do that if i still cant hold down solids? ive tried contacting the doctor who performed the surgery but of course they tell me im fine and that this is normal. Can anybody offer me any advice or suggestions?

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Great job........I think I would talk to your Dr.....You should be able to eat solid foods by now without throwing up.....They will be able to tell you. Keep up the good work

I would try to find a surgeon near you and get a second opinion. Sounds like you might have a stricture and just need to get it dialated.

I was going to say the same thing. Yes men drop the weight faster, but if you are having trouble eating you need to find a doctor that specializes in WLS here and find out what's going on. A stricture is highly possible and easily fixed. Good luck!

Find someone locally who will see you (this may be a challenge as some US doctors are kinda funny about patients who go out of the country to have this done and come back here needing help)....keep looking though......

Get a meal plan and let them know what you are eating or not eating. At this stage, you should be completely able to focus on Protein first, veggies 2nd, then carbs if there's room (doesn't sound like there ever is). Chew everything to a pulp before swallowing. Have you had any labs done? After this amount of weight loss (I lost 100 of mine in 6 months), you REALLY need to make sure your vitamin levels are on track.

Keep us posted on you and let us know how we can help!

Welcome to the board, thank you for joining us.
Congratulations on your wonderful weight loss.
Yes, men lose faster with this surgery, it's probably due to more muscle and no hormonal cyclic stress.
Can't really say if 120 is really that much, since you don't have your stats up yet.

That said, a stricture is a possibility. Do you have a PCP in the US? Can that dr refer you to a gastroentrologist who is familiar with weight loss surgeries, and can scope you? If you can't find a bariatric surgeon in the US who is willing to see to you, then, unless you go back to your surgeon in Mexico, through your PCP is the next choice.
Things like this is the reason why I say, when people research the option of out of the country surgery, to make sure you have a good professional team to support you when you are back in the US.
Hope you feel better soon.
((((((HUGS)))))) May your journey go well.

The amount of weight loss is not unusual, but the ongoing rejection of food is. The rest have given you good counsel. Good luck finding the answer!! Keep us up to date on your success!

Well if your goal weight of losing 130 was a sound number then yes you have lost weight at an alarming rate as 50% is the expection the first 6 months after surgery and you are nearly to your goal weight loss in 5 months. I def would go talk to another surgeon to see what is going on so you can get back to eating some solid foods. I also probably would not waste time eating too many potatoes, etc. and concentrate on all the good high protein foods you can eat, or insure you are taking lots of protein supplements like shakes etc, or mixing in protein powders perhaps in those mashed taters. Good luck.

Hi Fernando and welcome! Congrats on the great weight loss! I've seen folks lose that much in 5 months. But your inability to keep solid food down should be checked out. Suggest you consult a gastroenterologist and get a scope to see what is going on. Make sure you tell him exactly what surgery you've had etc. Gastroenterologists are typically the ones who do follow up for gastric bypass anyway. Good luck!
