Welcome, Bob!! I guess I'm the token guy here, good to have another one coming online!! I don't live in Rochester, but it's only about 55 miles east of here. The main hospital is called the Mayo Clinic, and it's not in NY State, but it's a Rochester! Actually, I've been in that part of the state, Finger Lakes, Rochester, Buffalo several times on work and vacation. Nice area!
I'm a few months ahead of you in this wild adventure! Look at my numbers to see what is possible. Guys lose weight faster after WLS than the ladies do, so when you check out their numbers, you might want to consider that as potentially a minimum. Your mileage may vary, one size does not fit all, etc., etc., but you are in for a life-changing experience!! It'll make you wonder why it took so long for you to do it!
Of course, the full benefits are only realized when you totally change your relationship to food. You will not be able to eat a lot post-op, so it's important to make sure that what you do eat is the vital necessities. The nutritional counseling will definitely help you understand this better and get some practice in applying it before your surgery.
This isn't the easiest way to lose weight, but it is worth every problem you could possibly run into. Ask anyone here if they'd do it again. I haven't heard a "no" yet. I wouldn't recommend it to everyone, only the determined. Would I do it again? In a heartbeat!!
Welcome to the best place on the net to find support, wisdom, and some really good friends to help you through this journey!!

Perfesser,
I see that this board has tons of very friendly people who are willing to share their experiences and help in any way they can. I was actually recommended this site by Imlosinit, when I went to my very first WLS support group here in Rochester, NY. I'm a member of other boards, but this one seems the most friendly so far!
I've had one WOW moments so far, even though I've only had my first nutritionist appointment. When I had my first appointment on July 31, I weighed in at 373 pounds, so that was my official start weight. I weighed myself this past Monday (4/11) at the Diabetes & Weight Management Program offices I've been going to for quite a while now. When I weighed in there, I was 365 pounds! Amazing, I'd say! The nutritionist said, based on my health insurance, that I would need to lose 5% of my weight, which works out to be almost 19 pounds. So already, I am almost halfway there!
Bob

Hooray Bob!!!! Being on this board while I was biding my time has helped a lot. I feel like I have a lot of knowledge going into this surgery. Hopefully, if you hang around, you'll soak up some useful day to day information that they don't teach us at our seminars and other appointments.
