Default New here, and just starting my WLS journey

Hi everyone!

I'm a 44 year old male, who is just getting started on the WLS journey.

I've been a heavy guy for quite a while now, and working as a phone-based computer tech support person for almost 4 years now has not helped the matter.

After quite a while, my PCP recommended I check into having gastric bypass surgery.

I have been working on losing weight for a number of years, including seeing both a nutritionist and a therapist for a good 2 and a half years. I've gone through a weight management program as well, and have been doing that and exercising since early January. I'm just started attending a support group at the hospital where I am having my surgery (God willing), and found out about this site from someone there who is a regular here.

I would be interested in meeting up with and talking to people from my area (Rochester, NY) and hearing their experiences, so I know what to expect in the coming weeks and months.

Until then,

Bob

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Hi Bob,

I had my surgery on July 1st at Highland Hospital. My Doctor was Dr. Johnson and he was wonderful. There are a few of us on here that went to Highland and I am sure they will be glad to tell you about their experience.
I am 54 and this surgery is the best thing I did,I am just sorry I did not do it sooner.

Hey Bob,

Well I totally agree with Babs. I too went thru Highland Hospital and this sugery was the best thing I have ever done for myself and my family. I am 40 years old and my only regret is that I didnt do it sooner. Dont get me wrong it hasnt been a totally easy ride. There have been ups and downs and etc.......the hardest part for me is the emotional side of things.
I had Dr. Omalley and I cant say enough about him. He was great and I even had to go in for a second surgery a few months ago for a hernia operation. Due to working out so much~!!! who would have ever thought that~!! But I have lost just about 116 pounds and I am 16 months out. Had my surgery in April of 2007.

Feel free to ask away with any questions you may have and like Babs said there are a few of us on here who have gone thru the Highland practice. Cheryl just had her sugery very recently too.

Hey Bob.......Im not from your area but I had the WLS 8/14/04.....4 yrs tomorrow. All I can tell you is good things......There are ups and downs but the ups outweigh the downs by afar.............Everyone here is great. Any question you have you can ask here and someone has been through that experience. My WLS journey has been a wonderful experience.

Just remember this is not a quick fix. For the first yr or 2 it seems like it is because you are losing weight at a fast speed. But during that time PLEASE learn your new life style because it will become a challenge. You will have to be careful and watch what you eat once your stomach is able to hold more. But I would do it again OVER and OVER again.........Good luck with your journey and keep in touch with all of us.
Your in our prayers......and I know I speak for everyone!!!!!!!

Babs,

My surgeon is Dr. Johnson, too! Or, it will be, assuming the surgeon who I had the initial seminar with is the one who will do the surgery.

Do any of you go to the MONARCH support group meetings, or the Odyssey support group meetings?

Bob

Hi Bob,

I just had surgery last week at Highland with Dr Johnson. I am only 9 days out and so far it has been a wonderful experience. Dr Johnson and the program are terrific in preparing you for your new life. I haven't been to a support group yet but will try to get to the next one.

Welcome to the board, everyone here is full of information and support.

I was about to say that. As for Odyssey, it is held at Park Ridge Living Center, but unsure of the time and date here at work. You could look under Yahoo Groups (groups.yahoo.com) for either of those two groups. The address for MONARCH is Monarch_support_group : MONARCH, and the address for Odyssey is TheOdysseyGroup : The Odyssey Support Group. Also is the blanket group that seems to cover both groups, WLSnetworkofwesternNY : Odyssey Support Group. They send reminder emails out like 2 days before meetings, then again the day of the meetings.

Cheryl, were you there last night?
