Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Have you checked to see what your insurance does cover? They may pay for nutritional counseling or something that would help in your weight loss efforts. There are a lot of people on this site that have had success with the gastric bypass. Most insurance companies pay for that procedure. What ever you do, don't give up! We are here for any advice or questions you may have!

You are young. Have you considered changing jobs? Network with people who work similar jobs in your area and see if their insurance companies cover WLS.

Insurance companies contract with employers are reviewed and updated annually. Don't give up. Keep focusing on making yourself healthy and you may see a change. You can also squirrel away some $$ on a regular basis so self-pay may indeed be an option for you.

find out why your insurance wont cover it. Have your dr write letters, you write letters, and call your insurance co. sometimes with enough contact and bugging them they will change. biggest thing is your dr writing letters about what the obesity is doing to your health.........good luck

My insurance didn't cover the band either, but they did cover the bypass. See what they do cover and if not I'm sure you'll get info on self pay as a few on here have had to go that route.

There is an ad in the space just beneath your post that starts by saying

"Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it."

Click on it and see where it takes you!

Welcome to the board, thank you for joining us.
(((((HUGS))))) May your journey go well.

How much research have you done about losing weight through surgery? Have you talked to your PCP about this? Have you looked into all options there are in the medical world?
Why do you want lap band and not the other types of weight loss surgery?
If you have done all the homework and you are sure that lap band is the route for you, then, it might be best to see if there is a way to change your insurance.

If you have just started looking into this, and are looking into losing weight with the help of surgery, then, my advice is to check out ALL types of surgery first, not just lap-band. All types have their strong points and weak points, and you should personally do research on all of them, and then make your choice. You may find some surprise answers along the way, and it may turn out that your insurance will cover what you discover.

Another thing you can do is look into where you would like to have the surgery, go to their seminars, and ask about what to do about your insurance, they may know be able to help you out with finances.

Hope things work out for the best for you.

Hi Amber and welcome to a very nice community!

There are several things you can do. First, there are places on the web which will help you deal with insurance companies. Sometimes your surgeon will do this also.

Second, if you go to Mexico and have it done, it's a great deal less money than having it done here.

that being said, there are enough studies on the efficacy of the lap band that you should be able to get your insurance company to pay...

Try going to this website or even writing this surgeon (now a band specialist after many years of doing WLS and also studies on it) - there might be some more advice there:

Weight loss doctor - Lap-band surgery seminar - Bariatric surgeon in Phoenix Arizona (AZ)

Don't give up... most folks can get their insurance to pay for the lap band now...
