| Hi everyone im a newbie Hi everyone . im kay, 33 from west yorkshire england and ive just got my first appointment to go see Dr Barth at leeds general infirmary with a view to having gastric bypass by roux en y. Ive had all my bloods taken etc via my G.P and now have to wait for my first appointment at the obesity clinic on the 29th of september. The PCT have approved my surgery due to me having a BMI of 43, poly cystic ovarian syndrome, blood pressure and borderline diabetic. does anyone know how long it will take from my first appointment to the actual surgery?... ive been told it will take up to 4 years but i really dont think i can hold out that long, ive been too fat for way too long and i just need a better quality of life for me and my son..i just want to be able to take him to the park and run with him etc without breaking out in a sweat and getting out of breath. |

That all depends on your insurance and your surgeon. Some insurance companies in the states require a six week supervised diet before setting anything in motion. Some may actually require six months.
My insurance did not, they just required a psych exam and meetings with an nutritionist. My hang up was getting my A1C (blood glucose) level below 7. My surgeon would not do surgery until then. I was at 7.3 but it was darned hard to get it down there. I was taking a blood test every month (Usually done every three months) because I was so close. I finally ended up going to an endocronologist and got put on a shot to help control the blood glucose, along with my other meds. I started the process on Dec 28th of 2006 and had my surgery on May 14th 2007. So I was at 4 1/2 months.
But remember I am in the US, I cannot answer for the medical system in the UK. Maybe UK Justice can be of some help there.
Anyway, Good Luck, and don't give up!

UK medicine is totally different than US medicine, and depending who you talk to, that is either a very good or a very bad thing.
There are stories of UK patients waiting 4 years for a gall bladder to be removed, so using that logic it isn't too far off base to wait that long for WLS.
I hope I am wrong, Kay, and I hope someone from UK/Aus/Canada, or similar "socialized medicine" country can help you further.
I have "HMO" insurance, and my medical group required I take 6 months of nutrition classes before getting a surgeons referral. With the wait for the classes to start, the total wait was about 1.5 years. Many insurance companies and policies do not allow WLS, so I am blessed in that way.

Welcome and good luck to you. I wish that I had some answers for you, but as the others have already stated, it is really hard to determine that.
