Exclamation Vitamin Deficiency

I just wanted to share with everyone the importance of taking our vitamins. I have been VERY lax on taking mine. I had gastric bypass 13 months ago, and have lost 145 lbs. I have done UNBELIEVABLY well, and feel GREAT!! On a whim I asked my family doctor to check my vitamin and mineral levels (yes my surgeon recomended the test months ago, and I didn’t follow thru). I am LOW on EVERY vitamin, and completely DEFICIENT in B-12. Not only do I have to go for a nuerological exam (lack of B-12 causes damage), I am also "B-12 deficient anemic". I had to go to my doctor 3 days in a row last week for 2 shots EACH day; every day this week for a shot; once a week for the next month; and once a month for probably the rest of my life!!! I am also on PRESCRIPTION mega-dose vitamins (3 different ones). You think over the counter ones are pricey??? (rolls eyes)...I have certainly gotten myself in a mess. I would have probably not known until it was too late if I hadn’t just decided to run the tests. Please understand how important they are so no one else has to go thru this.

Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

I would have thought your surgeon's office would have been "harping" and asking about how you were doing with taking your vitamins. Lab resulsts will indicate which vitamins are deficient. Anyone who doesn't adhere to a daily regimine of vitamins and calcium citrate is asking for health issues, with some of them long lasting or permanent. It's good you found out now. My insurance does routine labs every 6 months. I have no real good idea why you had to ASK for lab results for your vitamin levels, they should be routinely done. DAVE

Sorry that you had to go through this, but I am so glad that you shared it. There are a few people out there that I know that feel that they dont need them anymore since they are 4-5 years out now. NO NO NO. It is a lifetime commitment!
Godd luck with getting things back in order.

Thanks for the reminder Rhonda and sharing how important this is to do!!

It just seems sometimes a lot of posties get to their low weight and think "I'm just another skinny person" and we are NOT we will NEVER be. We have to be on top of it all the time. I am so glad to be going to the Bariatric hospital and getting all these panels done that should have been done all along by my PCP NOT just the normal CBC stuff

I'm now taking a ton of vitamins several times a day including a chelated chewable iron...will know in a few weeks at the next appt what ELSE I will have to take.

urgg!!

But the point being we can never ever be lax on this stuff..well it's dangerous and some deficiencies can cause permanent damage to our bodies..that's not a good thing you know? :-)
