Default Question for Post-Ops

Hey guys --

I can't be the only one that thinks like this. Do you guys obsess with the scale? My husband gets SOOOOOO mad at me! And I know it's ridiculous; I weigh myself a minimum of 4 times a day. He told me one day he was going to the throw the scale in the trash. I literally started hyperventilating. I was absolutely panicked that he was going to throw away my scale. That scale dictates every aspect of my life.....what I eat for the breakfast, my mood, what we have for dinner, what I'm going to wear, EVERYTHING.

There are times when I question of this is developing into an eating disorder. As I've commented here before, in my house we call dumping "making a refund". Sometimes I find myself hoping for nausea so I have an excuse to make a refund. That can't be good. I don't want to trade a food addiction with an eating disorder.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

HUGS....
I dont think its eating disorder. THESE things happen to us after the surgery. ITS hard.

I considered myself addicted to the scale after surgery because i had to weigh daily. AND i had to see weight loss. Of course now because its not moving and it, like you, impacted my mood for the day, have stopped.

I wont say i weghed that many times a day knowing am and pm weights are different and that would just stress me out to much. SO it was a daily weigh in for me stark naked, after am BM!!!

Its hard but perhaps you should at least cut down to one dailly weigh in.
I guess sometimes i feel i have to watch the scale now so that i dont loose control like i did before.

ITS hard!!!!

I agree with Lisa that you should try to cut down on the weighing. I know that I was a lot less cranky less often when I started weighing myself only once a week. Good luck with it sweetie. you aren't alone. I have had the same thoughts.

christyblue's DH actually hid the scales and brought it out only every couple of weeks. Boy, was she complaining here at that time.

Professionaly speaking, if you think that you may have a problem here, it might help you to get some counseling, What is the true underlying reason that makes you hop on the scale? Do you find yourself doing this more when you are under stress? If there is a hidden issue you need to resolve, then you could use some help in aquiring methods in dealing with them.

Hey DEBS....I'd just challenge you to not be upset by the word or thought of an "eating disorder"....that clearly says something worse to you than a "food addiction" - both being something very simular to one another...

  3. An ailment that affects the function of mind or body:

I think an Eating Disorder and a Food addiction are one in the same...As Food Addicts we have something that's just not right about the way we think about ...and treat food. Its out of order...there is confusion involved...and it affected our bodies and their function.

All of this to say...you don't have to be anorexic or bulimic to have an eating disorder....
As far as your scale addiction goes...I complete understand. I too weigh obsessantly. I think part of that is the nature of the beast (being our food disorder...eating disorder...food addiction etc...) it is the consequence to the choices we make about food.
I've tried everything to rid myself of the scale. Early on PostOp...my husband hid the scale and would only bring it out once a week...for a while that was okay...but then I was worried about gaining...or retaining water...or what was going on with my body. So...I'm back to weighing everyday. I don't get on much thru the day...but, like Lisa...I usually weigh in the morning completely naken...before I've eaten or drank anything...and then after a BM. A little obsessive...I know.

After I read Exodus from Obesity...& she basically said - weigh each day....know your body and your weight. She basically says what you are doing - weighing...and keeping a close grip on your wieght is the way to keep it off.

Now, I like what Doc said...take an inventory of what is going on for you when you are weighing...do you get a rush from it?? You should consider to journal with it...and evaluate what is going on for you...
I don't think it's as bad as where you were before. RIGHT??

I think you are doing fabulous Debs...glad you are here with us!!

Hi,
I know I have a scale problem. I don't have a scale and try to do it only once a month. It drives me crazy otherwise. Maybe once I reach a more normal weight I will be able to handle it.

KAT you make alot of sense to me because now that im in the 160's i do not weigh myself much at all and have backed off alot.
FOR me it happened when the weight loss stalled. I had ot weighings were effecting my moods so i have stopped looking. I will know if i gain if my pants stop fitting or get to tight. SO i know all is fine.

Lisa speaking of tight pants....I keep waiting/expecting my jeans to start being uncomfortable the way they used to get when I went on other food programs. I have to remind myself that it won't be long till I'll be down another size. It is really hard to type that thought...I feel like I'm going to jinx myself. This WLS still hasn't sunk in all the way I guess.

Hmmm. Reading all your posts, it seems to me that somewhere within you, you are *almost* expecting somewhere deep within you that this too, will *fail* Never mind that so many others have succeeded, YOU are the *first* one who is going to fail at this.
So, now is the time to take inventory of yourself.
How do you feel, how is your well-being, your health? If you are still in the early losing stage, it's likely you don't see much, but if you're close to goal, I'm sure there are lots and lots of things that makes you think this has been all worth the effort you have put into it.
While with all the diets that you have tried up to now, and in the end failed at once you got off track, this time, you've been given a tool to use along with the diet, and this tool will NOT go away, so, so long as you keep using the tool the way it should be used, the diet you need to keep will be easier to work with, than without the tool, and it WILL lead you to SUCCESS. Keep your trust in that.
