Thumbs up Clarification of "goal weight"

Peanut and I were at the surgeon's office Friday for her required meeting with the in-house nutritionist. The conversation turned to my progress since the surgery, and the nut commented that I seem to have done well. She weighed me and entered the new weight into the database as a data point in my history. While she was in there, I looked at the info they had on me.

My original goal, set by the doc, was to lose 75% of my Excess Weight Loss (EWL). That put my goal weight at 184 pounds. Men typically reach that around the 1-year mark or so. I have lost 88% of my EWL and have been holding at this weight for 3 months now (+/- 2 pounds).

As she quizzed me on what I've been doing to achieve these results, she came to the conclusion that the reason I have done so well is that I have been boringly unimaginative in following the doctor's instructions. I have not tried to modify them, take shortcuts, "cheat", or any other counter-productive behaviors. I still have not re-introduced refined sugars to my intake, and quite probably never will. Sugars proved they weren't my friends, why would I want them back in my life?

I can eat just about anything I want to. It's just a matter of defining your wants in terms of possibilities. Peanut and I were on the road yesterday. We had lunch in a Mexican place, complete with chips and salsa (in moderation unknown in my past life!!). Dinner we had with friends at Applebee's. Peanut and I split their Chicken Quesadilla Grande appetizer and both got full for under ten bucks! It's possible to maintain without sacrificing everything you've loved - you just have to stick with the things you loved that are now on the approved list and practice a bit of discipline.

Compared to anything else I've done, this is the most sustainable, sacrifice-free and satisfying eating lifestyle I've experienced. I am enjoying it thoroughly! When I watched some of our friends at dinner, I saw behaviors I had unconsciously engaged in before. Peanut noticed them too (she's getting dialed in to the subtleties of this new way of life!) I realized just what a blessing it is to finally understand AND BE ABLE TO DEAL WITH these things. The tool is just that, a powerful means of defending from the goblins (or is that "gobblings"? ) of the past.

Life is good! I'm glad I have a pool of friends here to share this with - my non-op friends have no clue what I'm talking about!

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

You are sooooo right! I agree with you. I'm only 3 months out of surgery and have lost 74 pounds (119 pounds overall!). I've never been happier with myself. I follow the rules and have no desire to "cheat". You are a great inspiration! I also see alot of my past behaviors in other people. I believe if you embrace this surgery and live life to the fullest, the way you see things changing in an amazing way. You right in saying that other people don't understand that, that's why I love coming here and knowing that there are people out there that understand me... You rock, Perfesser!!!!!!!!!!! Have a blessed Day!

I am so glad that you posted this. It is so true.

Being on the other side now I am really seeing the behaviors that got me to where I am now. At least now I can identify them and defeat them!

amazing ~~~ you followed the rules and it worked ~~~ I def agree about the sugar thing. I've found that I can tolerate some sugar in foods (for example cereals) but only about 9g per serving til they become a problem but as far as cookies, cakes, sweetened drinks, etc I just am not going to go there~~~ You are truly an inspiration and an entertaining WLS buddy too ~ hey, where are we going on vacation next year???? Your travel diary was great I'm excited for your wife too, I know she'll do well~~~

Boring means that I haven't tried to modify the basic instructions, and have obeyed them strictly. It DOES NOT mean that the food is boring! You can be as creative as you want WITHIN THE RULES!!

For instance, last night on the way home, we stopped at the store and I went in to look for something to put in the crockpot so that when we got home this evening, there'd be good smells in the air as we opened the door. They had turkey parts cheaper than hamburger, so I reduced their inventory by two packages (4 thighs, about 5 pounds worth.) I laid down a bed of veggies (spuds, baby carrots, green pepper, onion), tossed in some minced garlic (to keep the vampires at bay ), poured in a cup or so of chicken broth, and then put the thighs on top. When we got home 10 hours later, VOILA!! Roast turkey and veggies!

This is boring in that it follows doctor's orders exactly - high protein, veggies if there's room, etc. But it didn't taste boring! And I have 6 containers of it in the freezer for lunches and dinners!!

Boringly unimaginative means that if they tell you to drink a minimum of 64 ounces of water, you push for 80. If they say 45-60 g protein, you aim for 60, and if you hit 75, that's not bad either! It means if they tell you two weeks on liquids, you stock up on high-protein powder to add to your beef broth. When they say puree, you get a blender (the little hand models work great!) and figure out what you can put in it. It doesn't mean that when they say "soft foods", you resign yourself to cottage cheese for a week! You get a soup you really like and beat it to a liquid, then slurp it down and savor the taste!

It especially does not mean that you make excuses if you don't find it easy to do the above amounts. If there's a medical problem, get it fixed. FAST!! Otherwise, realize that they've done hundreds or thousands more of these procedures than you have, and if they tell you to drink 2 quarts of water, they must think it's possible.

You can live quite well being boringly unimaginative and creative at the same time. We are so fortunate that our tool comes with instructions. Years ago, the patients didn't receive near the level of screening, training and support resources that we have now.

As we left the doctor's office, there was a rather large, barrel-chested gent (300 if he was an ounce) talking to the nurse. He rode down in the elevator with us, and I asked if he was getting ready for the surgery. He replied that he had it done 4 years ago. As we walked to the car, Peanut said "there was a moral in there for us!"

Haven't thought as far out as next summer. With diesel being down again, we may take the bus out and tour America. But with Peanut's surgery not happening over the Christmas break, it looks like we might head back out to Salt Lake for Christmas. Gas prices are smiling on us now!

One year, we drove back from Utah and spent 300 miles on I-80 in Wyoming locked in four-wheel drive! We'll just have to see what kind of an adventure we can have this year! (Glad I'm not driving a white car! When you're tossing up a spray of snow behind you, the trucks can't see you, and you become a hood ornament!! )
