Default My Story is a Bit Different

Hello,

I just found this forum. I am scheduled for surgery on Tuesday (12-16-08).

My weight loss journey started a number of years ago with me considering having bypass to help me lose weight. I started the process, went through quite a few classes, but backed out for whatever reason. I just decided I didn't want to go through with it at the time.

Several months later I started having problems with swallowing and was eventually diagnosed with achalasia which is a disease of the esophagus. Through this I started losing weight (mostly because I couldn't eat very well). I have lost over 140 pounds already just because of the achalasia.

Three months ago I was scheduled to have surgery to help alleviate some of the symptoms of the disease and my surgeon called in a different surgeon to ask me if I wanted to add the bypass in addition to the surgery I was scheduled for. My BMI was already below the requirements but he had a few reasons.

1) I have (apparently) bad GERD. (He told me that believe it or not Gastric Bypass was originally developed to prevent GERD. )
2) I have also been diagnosed with Barrett's Esophagus
3) prevented weight re-gain
3) a couple of other reasons that I can't remember!

I told him I was in fact worred about regaining weight after I was able to eat again and he told me that the bypass would prevent me from gaining back all the weight I had already lost.

In short, I agreed.

So now I am scheduled for surgery on Tuesday at Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles. The surgeon is Dr. Edward Phillips and from what I understand he is one of the best in the area. Anyone have experience with him?

Thanks for reading my weight-loss story!

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Good luck on your surgery.

I had GERD and I have Barrett's Esophagus and my surgeon told me that the surgery will most likely stop my GERD effects and my Barrett's Esophagus with start to heal.

welcome aboard....it sounds like you have really been through it....one word of caution....THIS SURGERY WILL NOT PREVENT WEIGHT REGAIN....in fact, statistically, most patients have some re-gain....it's a tool that is used in tandem with changing your habits...it's not a fix-it-all....and if you DON"T change your habits, you can regain EVERY bit of weight you lose.....FYI!! I'm quite shocked, in fact, that a surgeon would tell you this...

We're thrilled you've joined us!
