Default First Time- Considering surgery

I am 54 yo and weigh about 310 pounds . I have to lose weight and now am considering this surgery.

I appreciate hearing of experiences. I am very worried - I have diabetes (mild which would probably disappear with weight loss) and some angina though no heart attack ( yet).

Thank you.

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

I started this journey at 309 and on New Year's Day I weighed my goal weight of 140. I did not have much support when my surgery date approached (I think more from the 'unknown' then anything) but I went ahead and had the surgery and couldn't be happier. I am 48 and wish I had done it sooner. I had lost weight many times before only to put it back on and then some. This has to be your choice because it is a life long thing. Read as much as you can and ask any questions you may have. This is a great site with a lot of wonderful people for support.

Good luck!

Thank you. I too have tried many diets . Most of my life, I was up and down 20-50 pounds. However, in my early 40s, I was about 100 pounds overweight. I lost that with diet, exercise and phentermine (which I will not ever take again), and was jogging at 45. Since then I have gained 150 pounds. Now, it is a critical health issue.
I am somewhat obsessive by nature, and have accomplished much in my life. I am highly educated, don't smoke or drink etc....
but I can't continue at this weight and I have become increasingly frustrated.
A doctor first urged me to consider surgery. I am ready now, but the amount of weight I have to lose is daunting.

Thanks Kim. I bought a book today on bariatric surgery and have read much of it already. I am perusing this forum - glad it is here.

Kim- your beginning weight is close to mine now, and your goal weight is the same as mine.
Congrats on your incredible weight loss.

I would like to hear more of your experiences...

Janie

I also started this journey at 310! I have lost almost 130lbs and will be 11 months post op on Wednesday!! I did not lose any pre-op. This surgery was the best thing I could have done for myself. My weight got to a point where it was just impossible for me to fathum losing it on my own. 20-50lbs was reasonable and managable for me to lose on a diet but 150lbs....WLS was just what I needed to assist me in getting the weight off.

I agree ~ I think that once you hit a certain amount needed to lose it becomes damn near impossible to take it off and keep it off. The statistics bear this out as well. Keep in mind, this is a "head" issue as well as a "weight" issue. Lots of work to be done there as well. Ask lots of questions and read, read, read. Glad you've joined us ~ we're here for you no matter which avenue you take.
