| RNY vs Sleeve? HELP! I am a virgin! But so happy to have found y'all. I just started the process of getting gastric surgery. At my visit I was asked what surgery I wanted. Said it's between RNY or sleeve. Nurse said if you are a sweet eater the RNY would be the best because you lose the craving. IS THIS TRUE? RNY scares me because of the "dumping syndrome".

Hello and welcome.
I don't have much knowledge about the sleeve - so I can't help you there.
And about dumping - it's funny, because although everyone is worried about that (prior), the ones who don't end up having it will post that they wish they did when they find themselves snacking on sweets again!

It's sort of true that you lose the craving - at least for me. Every now and then I really, really, really want a bite of chocolate but the great thing is that I can eat just a bite and stop. I know if I eat more than one piece that I will feel bad so I can control it.
I'm so glad that I dump, though I'm able to eat more "bad" stuff now that I'm so far out. The dumping really taught me that foods that I thought were good, or at least not so bad, were indeed BAD. It really helped me to learn and control myself. I hope it never goes away.

Thank you so much for replying. I never thought of "dumping" as a leson of what not to eat. Is dumping mostly vomiting?

When you dump, the body may reject the offending food out of whichever end it's closest to. You may also or instead have sweats, flushing, chills, nausea, or sleepiness. Or some combination of any or all of the above. Dumping isn't only digestive. It's metabolic, too. Your body is trying to get your attention when it dumps. Listen to it!!

Hello. I don't totally agree with what you were told about RYN vs sleeve. I still crave sweets sometimes not as much as before but a I do sometimes. The difference is that I know I can not have them or I will dump. Dumping is not always vomiting. I have not vomited since surgery. Dumping can be an extreme feeling of fatigue, irregular heart beat, diarhea and vomiting. But still enough to make you not want to do it again. The fact that RYN gives us this tool that our body uses to keep us in line was enough to make me choose the RYN. But ultimately the choice is yours. Good luck in what ever decision you make.

| Saw my cardiologist today. He DOES NOT want me to do the RNY. So, that helped with my decision, RNY or Sleeve (VGS). This desision has been keeping me up at night. I don't think I realized how deprate I felt til now. 'Last Call' kind of feeling. Thank you everyone for you support and answers!

Just out of curiosity, asking as one who had RNY with spectacular results, would you mind telling us what his reasoning is? I'm not trying to sway you, but I'm intrested in what the doctor thinks.
Thanks,
CT

| Part of it is my personal health issues. I had cancer, Uterine AdenoSarcoma, almost 10 years ago. Because of high dose chemo and radiation I went through I have had extensive health problems. The other part is he said he knows people who regret doing the RNY and have had health problems because of it.
