Hello to everyone! I am a new member and am excited about this board and the prospect of moving forward to a new and exciting ME

I have had a rocky weight loss surgery road. Banded in May 2008, lost 50 pounds, but then experienced significant reflux problems. Turned out I had a hiatal hernia that wasn't reparied at surgery and the band fills caused some serious medical issues. Even with the band removed, it was too late, the hernia became larger and I gained back the weight.

January 29, 2009 is my second birthday as it is the day, I had the lapband removed, the large hernia fixed and my gastric bypass. Even though it was rougher than I thought in the hospital, one week out, I am on no pain meds and feeling better and better each day.

My surgeon has me on a 3 week full protein diet, which I'm fine with. My biggest problem is getting protein in; I'm just not that interested in eating. Right now, my priorities are hydration (I became dehydrated in the hospital), vitamins and protein.

I would welcome any advice and tips. I know that this road is not about just the surgery as a "quick fix." Rather, it is about doing the work to change age old habits, responses, and reflexes that got me here.

L.

Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

How about protein drinks? Are you drinking some? The first weeks for me were protein drinks to get in my protein. Other than that, broth, sugar free pudding, sugar free popsicles and water.

Welcome...what a year you've had. Hopefully things will turn around now. There are a lot of proteins out there. My fav is Syntrax Nectar. There is a store on-line here or check out the EAS from Walmart or you local health food store. I prefer the Whey others like the Soy.

I'd like to know how you became dehydrated in the hospital? Weren't you on an IV drip? Weren't they monitoing your fluid intake? They brought in a sleeve of 1 ounce cups and every couple of hours they'd come in and count them to make sure I was drinking. Now focus on your sipping an ounce every 15 minutes and no excuses. Try your water with SF kool aid, Crystal lite (or your store brand). Be careful with Milk early out you may find it doesn't sit well.

Per nut recommendation, I am using Glycerna with 1/3 cup of nonfat dry milk. While never lactose intolerant before, I am having some not so nice symptoms after drinking those.

Other than my 30 minutes before and after, I'm drinking quite a bit now.

Thanks!

Pummychal

To say that the hospital wasn't the greatest would be an understatement. My surgeon is top notch, but 2 blown IV's that I had to alert them to, just bringing in pitcher of water, no monitoring, no helping or reminding to get up and walk. But then again, some of it was my responsibility to stay on top of it.

All is better now. You said to be careful of milk early on. The Glycerna shakes enhance with nonfat dry milk are causing quite an upset. I have some EAS from Costco, what can I mix it with to make a protein drink?

I'm sorry for the stupid question..

Welcome to the board, thank you for joining us.
Sorry to hear of your problems, but I sure hope the rest of your journey will go well.
Check out the Vitamns and Nutrition section, there are a lot of threads on protein supplements, you may be able to find something there.
((((((((HUGS))))))) May your journey go well.
