| OK, I am ready.
Well, after having a little bit of a hay-day over the past couple of weeks because I got my band emptied, I am ready to call this day 1. I am ready to start heading down the path that is all about lifestyle change and doing the things I need to do to be sucessful.
I am skeptical to make major changes right before my surgery because I haven't been to the pre-op nutritional counseling yet and have no idea how long they will have me on a liquid diet. I am kind of scared that if I lose too much weight pre-surgery that they may just remove the band and not do the RNY since I am below 40 BMI already without a history of comorbidities.
But, I feel the least I can do is become more "aware" of what I am eating and why and start practicing more control.
Surgery is in 5 weeks! I can do this.

I would think that since you already have a surgery date that the insurance company has already approved. I can't imagine that the surgeon would not do the RNY jsut becaue you've lost some weight - just the opposite. Whatever you can lose now will make it easier for him to find the band to remove it.
I'm totally guessing here but I would think that the stomach would not go back to normal just because the band has been removed. I would think there is permanent disfiguration and they would need to do some type of surgery to fix it anyway, so why not RNY?
You ought to call the surgeon's office and ask this question because it would be a shame to gain weight right now if you don't need to, just to get the insurance company to cover it.

Oh no, I have no plans of gaining weight. I just don't want to do something drastic and put myself under 200 lbs. or something crazy. I know they wouldn't likely opt out of the RNY, but it is just a fear of mine. I didn't really need insurance approval per say. We are military and pretty much whatever the surgeon says goes. Previous WLS that has "complications" is an automatic qualifier for further intervention for the military insurance. (I don't really have any complications other than I am still fat and I cheated the band, but I am not saying anything) He says that I need the band removed and switched to RNY because the band hasn't worked for me. He came to that conclusion so easily, it is my fear that he would come to other conclusions if I lost a bunch of weight on my own prior to surgery. It is probably an irrational fear. I am going to shoot for getting down to at least 220 prior to surgery. That is only 7 lbs. At least I would feel like I am accomplishing something and putting myself closer to where I need to be.
I don't know if the stomach is permanently disfigured from having the band in place. The surgeon did say that removing the band was actually more complicated than the RNY itself though. Quote:

No, I don't think the stomach is permanently disfigured, but if the band was in long enough, it may take some time until the section the band went around spreads again.

Most surgeons take part of the stomach's outerwall and loop it around the band and then suture the stomach to itself to hold the band in place. So essentially, the stomach is forced to heal itself around the band. I have a feeling that is the part the complicates it. They have to really kind of dig in there to get the band out. Quote:

Ah, so the stomach is folded on the outside around the band.
Yes, that would be kinda tricky, and some of the adhesion may remain, but on the other hand, if a clean separation can be made, then you shouldn't have to worry about anything.
