Well I am trying this again. I am not sure if my last message was sent if so sorry. I am still trying to figure out what I am doing.
Please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Lynn and I am new to the site. I have battled weight my whole life. I have even owned a fitness centre for 9 years and still have trouble lossng weight. I currently weigh 247 pounds and my BMI is 46 and I am feeling every ounce of it. I do have some health issues and not sure if this qualifys OHIP coverage or not. I am hoping someone may have some information that may help. I have had numerous surgeries on my knee and they expect to do a knee replacement in June of 2010, I have had infamation of the pancreas twice. Having said all of this I am still very active and have sold my business but was just wondering if anyone could help with information about the OHIP question. PS do tehy sent the approval to the referring physician or does it go directly to the patient. My forms were sent in around the midl of May 2009.

You talking about Other health insurance provider? Im thinking you have two policys? You both should be notified regarding the matter. Sometimes the physians office will get it first or vice versa.

I am from Ontario. The process was / is extremely easy. You start with a visit with your GP. Hopefully he believes in this procedure, although it is possible he may not.
If he is familiar with it, he will likely have a US surgeon to refer you to. AT the present time there is only 1 place in Ontario that performs this surgery which is in Toronto and it has a 4 year waiting list.
There are new facilities being built this year throughout Ontario (including here in Ottawa) and I belive some may be open as early as this fall.
There is a form you can download from the OHIP site on the internet but you will need to first see where you r doctor suggests you can have the surgery done (which US Doctor).
The form is to request approval to pay for out of counrty surgery. I got my approval back in less than a week.
I did something extra however whihc may have sped up the process. I had my doctor first refer me to a weight loss doctor at the Ottawa Civic Hospital and he put me through tests and wrote a report which supported my need for some sort of medically supervised weight loss. That weight loss doctor referred me to the US surgeon.
So my application to OHIP prepared by my GP included the full report from a weight loss doctor which I believe helped me get approval so quickly.
The other thing I did after my first visit with the US surgeon was to ask to go onto their cancellation list. That moved my surgery date ahead by 4 months.

Oh and BTW the Toronto office JUST called one of my clients and asked her if she could go to Montreal..as the waiting list in Toronto has skyrocketed suddenly since my surgery in November. Toronto Humber regional Hospital is going for the "center of excellance" certification for bariatric surgery. Im glad i went there. I have my blue hospital card within reach at all times..just incase. I was told by the doctors there that should anything happen...im to get in a car(not driving) and get back THERE. As by the time they even see me in our hospital...they would have me in the OR and fixed there.
