Default Getting Better-3 Months Out

I am new to this web site, and like what I've seen and read so far. I had my surgery on 3-3-09---so just 3 months out. I did not, however, leave surgery without complications. I was in the hospital 5 days, needing to stay the extra 2 days, due to a bleed, and needing 2 units of blood before I was sent home. I had complained from the time I was in the recovery room, at my 1 week p/o appt., and then again at my 3 week p/o appt., of a feeling like air in the muscle, and pain to the left side of my rib cage area; and was always told, "that is normal". But at the 3 week appt. my husband insisted they take xrays or something and they fineally did--and guess what, they found I had a pulmonary effusion (fluid surrounding my left lung), they say caused by a seroma (a large blood clot sitting next to the surgery site). I was admitted back to the hospital and stayed 2 wks., having chest tubes placed to drain both ( I had 2 1/2 liters of fluid off my left lung and felt much better--food tasted better and I was able to walk around the halls without being short of breath!) But it was short lived. The fluid came back the following day after the tubes were taken out. The surgeon discharged me after 2 weeks and said I needed to just let it resolve on it's own. He did give me diuretics and potassium, which I had great difficulty swallowing so I was not able to take as directed--the same as with my vitamins, and foods did not taste good, as well as, smells made me nauseas. I almost felt as I was pregnant! Too old--52 years--not happening!Well, I did continue to loose wt. through all of this, but not able to exercise, and just this last week, I began to feel better and am able to get up and do a little housework, but am very weak and exhausted with exertion, therefore, have not done much exercise, but have started with bands and 2 lb. weights, that I can do in the chair. So I feel I am on my way now! My biggest hurdle now is eliminating the carbs I ate to combat the nausea ( crackers with cheese mostly), and replace with proteins. I have noticed my hair really begining to come out now, but other than that I have not had any other problems, and I am grateful for that.
Well, what a way to introduce myself. I hope I wasn't too long winded or boring, but I wanted to get my story told and see if anyone has had similar situations and what they did to resolve them. Let me know!

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

I had complications myself with my surgery. I was in the hosptial a total of 17 days when Ifirst had mine done. With 4 of them being in ICU in a drug induced coma. What happend to me was I had old adhesions from a old gall bladder surgery. I felt horrible the next day after surgery but wanted to go home so bad. I just kept getting sicker. I had surgery again and they found a adhesion had pooled blood. They fixed it but the surgeon felt my body had been so tramatized that he placed me in a drug induced coma to let my body rest.

During my stay I gained 20 lbs from fluids. They had to place a PIC line in because my veins were shot and trust me I was thankful for it. I dont even have a scar from that. Meds.,... well I took them for about 3 months after surgery and then found my tummy never woke up from the surgery by having a EGD done. THey got that working again. Now........ I did well........ until I didnt take my vitamins everyday like I should had. And I took asaprin based products like Goodies or BC powder thinking it wouldnt set on my tummy like a pill would. I ended up with a horrible ulcer. It had eat all the way down to the suture line in my new pouch. That physican said it was the worst ulcer he ever saw in his 15 years of practice. If it didnt heal up soon he would have to go back in and make the pouch even smaller which would be a very long surgery and a very long recovery time. I was placed on 2 Nexium a day. I have to open the capsule and take it that way so it dont lay on my tummy. Where the ulcer was cause my stomach to not empty well. I still have that effect now. When they checked it again 2 months later It was almost healed up.

Needless to say during this time they found I was very deficent in vitamins. See I did all this last part to myself.

My advice to you at this point is... do exactly what they tell you to. If your pain stays or gets worse let them know. Take your Vitamins. I to was very tired and exhausted after surgery for several months. I lost my job which was the best thing that ever could have happened to me to let me rest.

You will make it though all this. You wanted to know if anyone had any trouble afterwards so I thought I would share. Stay informed ask questions and take care of yourself above all else.

Its great to meet you and Im glad you found us. Take care

The above post was not to scare anyone. We are all told of the dangers and risk to the surgery. We all do differently. Im doing good with it now. I have devloped Complex partial seizures however do not think its realted to the surgery. I have a putitary glad tumor they think that its setting it off. In reality it is a life saving last resort surgery. Would I do it again. YES I WOULD. The first month I wondered about it...... after I got better I knew I did the right thing.

If you're trying to kill the carbs from the crackers and cheese, can you substitute a higher protein, whole wheat cracker or a low-carb version? Either one'd help reduce the carb level without going completely cold turkey. Eventually, though, you have to kill the carb monster. After all he's done to mess up your life, he deserves a rest!

Good luck! I hope the worst is behind you and it's clear sailing from here. Looks like you've made good progress despite the setbacks, though!
