Default New Here- Bariatric nurse- surgery next week

Well I am glad I found this site cause I guess you could say I am struggling a bit now.

First of all, I am Alyssa. I am 30- mom of 2 married...I am nurse who cares for many patients but who also cares for bariatric surgery patients.

And Wed will be my day---that is if I can make it through this Optinasty--II mean Optifast period. Preop diet is making me sick--diarrhea....I had no idea how hard this would be.

I am 410 lbs...I am required to get an IVC filter day of surgery as well to prevent a pulmonary embolism. Scared and frustrated.....and feel like getting sick...

and does it get better????

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

PhillyRN,
Welcome to the board! This is a wonderful place to be and I am sure that you can learn a lot and also share a lot. Great bunch of folks here.

Not sure if the Opti-gross gets much better or not. I only have ONE day left of it, thank the Lord. It helps me if I use my Magic Bullet like thingy and put a little ice and almond extract in it. The strawberry makes me gag, just can't take it, but I do fine with the vanilla and choc if I doctor it up a bit. Personally,I think it's the part of the "mental preparation" to be on the Opti-nasty. You can't wait for surgery to be done with it!

Hang in there, girlie! You'll make it! And I am SURE you'll have excellent care at the hospital!!! You are only a week away. Yipppeee! Good thoughts coming your way.

salli lou

Well, phil, if it didn't get any better, you'd have an awful lot of unhappy people slouching around here instead of our regular community happy dances!! Sure, the period on each side of surgery sucks, but you won't live the rest of your life on a liquid diet! It's gonna be quite inconvenient for you the next month or so, and (if you're anywhere near normal) you'll be asking yourself and us just what the heck you've done to yourself and why! But once you get back on real food, and start seeing the pounds drop off, your spirits will soar!!

You have doubtless seen many folks struggle through the first night and a day or two post-op. You've probably got an accurate picture of that part of it, but have you had much exposure to what goes on after they go home? That's when the living with it gets started, and there are a few challenges you'll have to meet, but nothing that thousands of us haven't already gone through.

Use your excess nervous energy this next week to do a lot of stuff you ordinarily wouldn't. Cook for the family and freeze it, clean the house, pack and repack and then leave it all home anyway 'cause most of it you won't need. Keep yourself busy and time will pass. Spend a few hours here reading what others are going and have gone through and how they handled their situations.

We'll save you a place on the loser's bench! Good luck on Wednesday!!

Welcome welcome!!

Yes it does get easier. I am only a few weeks post-op as you can see by my information and even this close to my surgery, I am very happy I did it. It's tough, no doubt, but you chose this option for a reason and it's such a wonderful tool. You will be so amazed at how well this works, if you abide by your surgeons instructions and you will be so happy, you just wait and see...

Congratulations on your decision and everything is going to be just fine

Oh yes honey it gets soooo much better!!!!!! Hi im Vickie and welcome to the boards and the best site for support in the world......... I think so anyways. I use this board like the air I breathe for support. Your in a hard stage right now but....... you will be able to start getting in different stuff soon. The filter is a good idea for you. Honey I was at 365 when I went in. Wait until your able to move better and you will see that fast.

Now with all I said and others before me enjoy it right now. Think of the new life........ you WILL have afterwards.

Now saying that. I want to ask you about your goal weight. Is this what your Dr told you to set it for? If not rethink it a bit. Im 5'10 and you see what mine was set at. That is a couple pounds not over weight for me. I think in the beginning setting a realistic goal for your self is a good move. If that is what you were told then ignore me. LOL. Take care and Welcome to the site. Please stick around and keep posting.

It just keeps getting better and better. You can do it. Pre surgery is the hardest, I think that makes it easier to look forward to going under the knife.
