Default I guess I'm the new kid on the block

I started this journey in November of 2008 at my rheumatologist's office. He told me I needed to get the weight off my knees or he'd have to start giving me shots in them. Ouch! He suggested bariatric surgery, and wrote a referrral for me. I was 277 pounds on that day.

I lost 40 pounds over the next 9 months. I was taking nutrition classes and seeing a behavioral health counselor, and walking a lot.

At first I couldn't walk around the building. Eventually, I got to where I could walk a mile a day and then--setback. They took me off my anti-inflamitories and I could barely walk again. Tylenol just didn't help enough.

Now, eight weeks out of surgery I am still extrememly tired. I have some heartburn, and I get fatiuged really easily when standing. I walk every day, but I am still huffing and puffing.

Durring my surgery he took my gallblader and also fixed a hernia (three for the price of one!) I figure that's why my recovery seems to be so slow.

Any of you veterans have any handy hints? Anyone in a similar situation?

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Hi Alice. I'm only a week out from my surgery so I don't have any advice on your situation, but I wanted to welcome you to RR. There are many veterans here who will be along to offer their support and wisdom. I hope things get easier for you soon. Best wishes, oh and congrats on your success so far!!

Welcome and thanks for joining us. You recently had major surgery. You're bound to be tired for a while. Try to make sure you get plenty of rest, all of your nutrients, and hydration. Doc will be along soon & be able to give you input. Visit often and ask anything.

Yes mam I do! Im excited to know how to help you acutally.

I have arthritis in my knees shoulders and hips. I also had to come of any meds with asprin NSAIDs all the good stuff as I call it to help with inflamation. Didnt take me long to complain in the hosptial that my joints were hurting. I had an extended stay I might add so it showed up so that my surgeon seen it. He placed me on liquid pain meds and kept me on them until I got in to see a pain management Dr. ( he at this time admitted to me that when he first started out and people would complain about pain in joints the thought it was in there head) as he aged he got it and understood the pain and would try to help with it.

Anyways........ I seen pain management and they placed me on a patch for pain. It was my life saver. I change it once every 3 days. Once I started having breakthrough pain over that I did tylenol but when that didnt work well they placed me on some liquid meds for pain in addition to the patch.

With losing all the weight dont mean you will loose all the pain. Yes it helps but when you got arthritis already built up in your joints it dont take that away. So ask them to schudule you with a pain management Dr for relief. I dont know what I would have done without them.

The tirdness is from the surgery and the amount of food you eat. That will get better with time. Just take those vitamins and get the fluids in and protein as best you can.'
The heart burn does need to be addressed. There are alot of us on Nexium prevacid etc...... for this. The tummy is healing and some of us have to take it now for a long time. Let your Dr know your having this problem so they can give you somthing to help with that. NO PEPTO. It has asprin in it.

I could be somthing your drinking making it burn. Any thing with a citrus flavor to it sets me on fire if I drink it daily. Even lemonade. It dont have to have sugar in it. So pay attention to that and see what is it that can be causing it.

Im Vickie btw and am very happy to see you here. We are full of encourgement here and can help you along the very best we can. WELCOME!

Hi and welcome to the site, the people are just so wonderful here and very caring people. My knees would hurt so bad from being so heavy and I really had bad gout. My knees hardly ever hurt anymore and my gout has gotten so much better that I have lost all that weight. I control it now with canned, cherry juice and raw cherries and lemon juice from real lemons. My back does not hurt near as bad anymore at all. I get very little back pain now and my tummy tuck has even cut down the pain even more. taking off that excess skin off my tummy took alot of weight of my back.

I don't really have any advice since my experience wasn't like that, but I'm sure Doc will be commenting soon with her wisdom. All I have to say is good luck with your recovery!

Welcome to the board, thank you for joining us.
Congratulations on your weight loss.
(((((((HUGS)))))) May your journey go well.

Sorry to hear you are having a rather rough time.
MsVickie's advice is sound.
What does your surgeon say about your heartburn?
Also, though it's still earlier than when most surgeons order post op followup blood labs, how are yours? If you have low iron or low blood count, that might account for your tiredness. VB12 might help, too. At 8 weeks out, some people have still felt weak, so you just may be one of them.
Hope you get the chance to talk to your surgeon soon, so he can assess your present state.
Hang in there.

Default Thanks for all the advice

I have an appoinment with my surgeon in 2 weeks. I will bring up the heartburn and fatigue issues with him.

I have an appoinment with my regular doctor next week. I want to talk to her about my blood pressure. I think I need to come off the medicine. (after all I've lost 80 pounds since she put me on it.) I get woozy when I get up.

I will also talk to her about the pain patch.

Is it possible to become lactose intolerant after drinking milk most of your life, or am I just sick of protein shakes?
