| Bad Habits
I have been doing pretty good with my new life style, but one bad habit has returned, CIGARETTES!!!!! I was sooo happy that I was smoke free for the last two months but recent financial stress' have caused me to pick up the habit again. I am disappointed in myself and would like to stop, FOR GOOD. I am just too ashamed to go to my doctor appointment this week and ask my surgeon if there are any prescriptions I can use following WLS so I can kick the habit. My surgeon is very "critical" of is patients actions in relation to life style changes, in a "daddy" kind of way, and I thought I could check with the forum to see if anybody else battled this demon and won! Any tips you can offer would be great.

Your surgeon's appointments are WAY too important to skip just because you started smoking again!! Sure, smoking will affect your body's ability to heal successfully, but all the more reason to check in to avoid problems.
Good luck kicking the addiction! Never having smoked, I can't offer anything useful in that regard (except support.)

Remember, just because you make a mistake or slip up, does NOT give you permission to return to your old habits. It's like going for a hike, with the goal of reaching the peak... if you make a wrong turn, it does NOT mean that you have to continue walking back down hill... it means that you need to stop, refocus and start hiking towards the peak, again. We are human and do get distracted, sometimes. But don't let a little mistake send you all the way back to ground zero, again. It gets easier and easier as you plug away at it.
I know... I went from a two-pack-a-day habit to cold turkey over 23 years ago. I had two small slip-ups (a few puffs on two occasions...) and then realized I was sabotaging my own goal: to be healthy and smoke-free!
Best wishes to you for getting your inner GPS back on track and starting back up that hill to health! You were on your way and simply took a small detour. Let us know how you are doing and we will support and cheer you on all the way!!!

Do NOT feel ashamed to be open and honest with your doctor! Tobacco use is a terribly hard habit to break and if you want to quit, tell him. I have taken Chantix after the surgery but I did notice that I got a terrible stomach ache from it.
BTW, I've quit and restarted numerous times. Just keep trying.

Hi. I have been smoke free for over a year. I am 34 now, and had smoked since I was about 18, about 2 packs a day. I had only tried to quit a few times before and had never wholeheartedly tried. Last November, I finally quit. Knowing that I would in the future have to quit for this surgery was one reason, also my Dad has many health problems related to smoking and finally the hospital I work at became smoke free so I figured if I had to go 13 hours without a cig at work, I may as well quit.
When I made up my mind I did use Chantix for 1 month. It is normally taken over about 3 months or so, but was very expensive so after taking it for a month, I decided not to refill the prescription and did fine without it. Many people have had bad side effects from Chantix, but I did not. No side effects whatsoever, BUT it costed over a hundred dollars for a months supply so for that reason I didn't continue it. I think what really made the difference for me was I was just finally ready. I had said before I wanted to quit, but deep down I didn't want to. I enjoyed smoking. Looking back, I don't see why, because now I can't stand the smell of it on others around me who smoke.
Good Luck, I know it isn't easy, but remember, nothing is. Choosing to have WLS wasn't easy either, but you can do anything you set you mind to do. What I can tell you is that for me (and I know everyone is different) but for me a year later I do not even want one.
Best wishes!!!
Mandy

Hi Chellegirl, I quit smoking (cold turkey) exactly one year prior to my WLS date. So it has been just a little over a year for me and it wasn't an easy one. The first few months were a difficult mind battle with me constantly reminding myself that I wasn't a smoker. After about 3 months I told my daughter to go get me a pack of cigarettes, she did, when she got back I smoked about 5 or 6 of them one right after another until I got so sick that I threw up, but guess what I NEVER wanted another one since then!! The smell just makes me gag now!! I still have dreams that I smoke, but I wake up and smile reminding myself...that I am not a smoker!!

To be completely honest, I have been smoke free for over 9 months and till I had rny had absolutely no desire to smoke anymore. About 3 months after rny surgery I began getting strong nicotine cravings and still do on occasion. I am assuming that it is due to "head hunger". I think that a much healthier way to deal with this "head hunger" is to maybe get some counseling to see what the hunger really is for.

I have never smoked, but my mother did and she quit after she had a heart attack caused by her smoking. I would just say you are definitely in a good place. You are asking for help, don't stop here. Keep going. Smoking is kind of like eating addiction, you got the tool for this, now see what tools you can get for quitting smoking. I feel for you, but I am so happy that you are doing the right thing by asking for help... Good Job!

I appreciate all of the feedback. My doctor was of course "disappointed", I swear it's like talking to my father with him but he gave me great advice and his support. He doesn't want to recommend medication at this time, only 3 months out from surgery, but he did give me support group information and suggested the patch. I know I don't want to smoke, to be honest it was either a cigarette or eating because I was stressed, and I failed at my first chance to choose "neither" and excercise instead. Well I am sure I will get the chance again to choose the right thing!

Go to your doctor appointment. I assume you had WLS to become healthier. Avoiding your doc because you've made a poor choice isn't going to help the situation. As a reformed smoker (2 pack a day) I understand your struggle. BUT, you need to attack this problem head on. Talk to your doc, explain the addiction, & ask his advice regarding treatment. If he starts to treat you like a child tell him what he's doing, remind him you are seeking his advice not condemnation, and move forward. If he's not adult enough to be receptive or his ego can't handle you direct approach perhaps a new doctor is in order. Good luck.
