Default New Here Too

Hi all. My name is Becka I am a 34 year old married Mom to 3. I have been struggling with weight since I was 15 years old. After I had my last child I told dh if I couldnt lose the weight within a yr I wanted to have the RNY (military will pay). That was 4 years ago. So now here is my delima. I can one get the lap band and self pay or I can get the RNY and have the Army pay. Once upon a time the RNY seemed like the perfect answer, now that I have heard about the Lap band I kind of like the idea of keeping my stomache and intestines intact. Granted the cash we would shell out for the lap band could go to better use but man I just want to be healthy and happy for once. I am tired of being 5ft 3 in tall and weighing almost 250. I have high Bp and diabetes and high cholestoral. I think no matter which choice I make something has to be done.

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Talking Hey Becka!

First...Welcome to the RR Board.

Second...If you hear this once...you will hear it 10,000x here on the board, "You are the only one that can make this big decision for you."

Third...As you gather information for your decision...gather this:
  1. How much weight do you have to loose?
  2. What is your BMI? Is it over 40?
  3. Have you talked to a surgeon for a consult - Surgeons that do RNY also do LapBand...and would be a better consult to help you with your decision.
When I was going for my consult with my surgeon, I was going to have the LapBand surgery. My BMI was 52.? And I was nearly 200#'s overweight.

In talking with my surgeon - he is the one that told me some facts & stats that I was unaware of. One being that LapBand patients typically loose about 60% of their excess weight with the help of surgery. And RNY patients typically loose 85% of their excess weight.

Applying that math to my situation...
  • W/ LAPBAND SURGERY: that left me being about 80#'s overweight...IF I was the average LapBand Patient.
  • W/ RNY SURGERY: that left me being about 30#'s overweight.
Just looking at that my decision was made. One of the things that may help is to apply your math, Becka.

Another thing - I had the RNY GB...and am 8mos. post op and have lost 124#'s. I still want to loose another 59#'s. My doctor also told me that within the first 6mos. the average person looses about 60%....the last % will come off gradually thru the honeymoon period. (first 18m - 24m.)

Hope this aids you in making your decision Becka...glad you found us on the board.

Welcome to the board Becka, thank you for joining us.

As for which surgery, the final decision is yours and yours only to make, but the surgeons themserlves have certain criteria to go by for which surgery, like what is your BMI, how much excess weight do you need to lose, and also for your life style, which is better. There are pros and cons for both surgeries, so you should research everything, and talk with a surgeon who can explain to you the pros and cons of both methods, and suggest which would work best for you.

((((((HUGS)))))) May your journey go well.

I started out like you. I ended up with RNY and VERY glad I did it. In the end, it is your choice. You have to do what is best. The more informed you are, the better chioice you'll be able to make for yourself. Good luck.

Thank you ladies so much. This is such a life changing ordeal that I want to make the right choice for me. I have met many people who have had both procedures done and there is always good and bad in them both. I think I will do the math as Femmemode suggested. Thanks so much for such a great welcome

HI BECAMARIE!
Welcome to the board.
GLAD you found the site thats loaded with information
that might help you make the choice that your faceing.
NO matter what fork you take on this journey
I am sure it will be best for you.

FOR me personally, i was at my witts end.
AT my max weight i was a mess, out of shape,
EVERYTHING. I feared dropping dead of a heart
attack or stroke at any given time. SO for me at
42 years old and having 3 small kids i wanted to live
and live long for them. SO for me i had to do this.
THIS risk to me at over 300 lbs out weighed the
small percent of risks the surgery had.

WHEN its time you will know. HONESTLY a year prior to
me makeing the decision to weight loss surgery i was of
the attitude no freakin way! SO amazing when your ready
and at your final straw in weight you know and it helps
in the decision makeing process. I know i loved my surgeon as
well and he was able to ease all worries too. SO maybe take
small steps to get educated and the decision will come to
you if this is or isnt right for you.

LOOK forward to getting to know you thru your posts!
HUGS

Just wanted to say from one Army spouse to another. We sound pretty familiar in our circumstances. AS all the ladies have said it has to be your decision. Good luck and keep us posted.

Default Welcome Becamarie!

The girls are all right on the money here. It is going to be your decision in the end. It's not an easy one to make no matter what you decide. All here, can vouche for that. You have to make alot of lifestyle changes, and be willing to exercise. Mostly, though, Becamarie, follow your doctor's protocol. I CAN'T STRESS THAT ENOGH. Probably seems UGH! about the exercise right now, but waaaaaaaay worth it in the end. Like, Deb said, do the math and weigh everything out carefully. I ended up having the open incision RNY. Yah, the scare isn't a pretty one, but the way I look at it, who is ever going to see it but my family dr., my surgeon, and the wife basically. I would do it all over again in a heartbeat. Whatever you decide, all the best to you. I had exactly the same ailments as you Becamarie, and I am proud to announce that I ail no more. All my meds are out the window, and I feel like a million bucks. It's a journey in the beginning that is exciting and scary, but one that is worth taking. You will get the support here, that we to needed with making the life changing decision to have the surgery. We are like one big happy family here. Welcome aboard, SIS.
