Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

I didn't have to do that..but insurance now is a LOT stricter on the pre op requirements and it DOES help a lot to shrink the liver down so it is not in the way for the surgeon during Laproscopic surgery. (mine was open)

Many. It helps shrink your liver so your surgeon has a better field of surgery--in other words, he can see better inside, and avoid nicking your liver.

Not only for the liver, men carry a lot of their weight in the belly area and the doctor wanted me to lose some of that to also help with the field of reconstruction.

I didn't have a fix amount to lose, but was on the liver reduction diet (what they called it) for about a month and lost 20lbs. It was good because it got me ready for after surgery, low fats, cut most carbs, sugar...etc

I was required to lose 10% which would have been 51.4 pounds. I got to 47 and she said that I had done a great job and showed that I was dedicated and she went ahead with the surgery. My surgeon sends people home the day of surgery if you have put on weight from the time you have your last visit till day of your surgery. The person that was scheduled before me found that to be true the hard way.

I would sure be in trouble. I don't know why but my weight has been going up each month for my 6 monthly pre-approval visits. I have cut out a lot of the things I won't be able to have after surgery, bumped up the water, started exercising (very slow-I have fibromyalgia) but I find myself wanting to snack more than I ever have before. I have had quite a few med changes recently so that may play into it and I know that I will have to do the liquid diet prior to surgery, I just wish I had the same appetite and weight as I have the last 3-4 years.

It is good to know that some of the surgeons are so strict as to send people away. I haven't gotten to meet with my surgeon yet, I have to call after I have the psych visit to get that scheduled so I may have some additional requirements that I don't know about yet, but the weight loss center seems very knowledgable about the entire process that their surgeons follow and double checking the insurance requirements.

I think I will go back to eating protien bars for breakfast and lunch and see if that helps.

On a different note, I met with my rhuematologist today and discussed the surgery and the fact that I will have to give up my beloved naprosyn. He was very supportive and actually gave me a new pain med to try to make sure it works prior to the surgery.

Sorry to ramble, haven't posted in a while....

Melinda

I was required to lose 10% and lost much more. However I have gained about 18 lbs back of the 57 I lost. I have a meeting with my surgeon tomorrow and he may reschedule mine when he finds out I have gained.
