Wink New to the site!

Hello all! I am glad to be here, it looks like I will get some of the information I am looking for. I am a 34 year old wife, mother of 2 and full time student. I am currently 5'5 and 260 pounds which is my heaviest weight and more than I weighed when I gave birth to my children. (although I have been overweight most of my life) I have met with my surgeon and we have begun the insurance approval process. I have United Healthcare Choice Plus. I have hypertension, a herniated disc in my back and yesterday I found out my cholesterol is high as well as my blood sugar. I was interested in getting the lap band however after the evaluation of my surgeon, psychologist and nutritionist, they feel that the RNY is a better choice for me. I am looking for insight you all may have about the following
* Approval by United Health care choice plus
*RNY life after it
*RNY vs. Lapband
*RNY lowering BP, Cholesterol and Blood sugar

Thank you in advance for your help and I look forward to learning alot!

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Welcome Flux!! Hope you find your answers, and friends, love and support, here too!

Life after RNY - nutritional changes, of course. Mental changes - absolutely critical!! This is a mind game. Life in general - you cannot now imagine how good it's gonna be for you!!!

RNY vs lapband - 2 major differences. OK, 3. Band - foreign body inserted in you, needs fills and maintenance, can shift undesirably or come loose. Statistics show that RNY patients as a whole lose more, faster, and keep it off longer. Dumping - the ultimate enforcement mechanism. Banders don't dump. RNY patients do. Dumping helps protect you from you.

RNY and health. My cholesterol was never below 200 even on meds (has been as high as 400.) It is now stable at 154 without meds. Triglycerides level has been as high as 1600, was 350 on meds, now 67 without meds. BP when last checked - 112/65. Was borderline hypertensive. I'll let those who were diabetic comment on blood sugar levels. (Note past tense - were!)

My surgeon told me RNY would be better for me than banding. For my money, he was right on!! My wife had RNY also and has had similar results.

Welcome to the board, thank you for joining us.
Good luck with your process.
(((((HUGS))))) May your journey go well.

One absolute advantage of RNY over lap band--the resolution rate of diabetes is much higher with RNY in comparison to lap band.

I had my RNY in Sept 2009 ...........almost immediatly I was off of my diabetes meds. I am now almost 7 months post op and my labs are awesome!!! I use to take 14 pills a day for cholesterol, diabetes, reflux, etc etc ................now i take only nexium, vitamens and calcium!!!!!!!!!!!! So i am def a fan of the RNY, I too was thinking of the lap band but my surgeon said that diabetics dont do so well with the lap band. Good luck on whatever you decide to pursue!!
