| Hello - from Chicago! I've been reading, researching having WLS and came across this forum. I knew I was interested in WLS in Jan. ’06; I visited my PCPat Northwestern Mem. Hosp. on my birthday in Jan. '06 - she told me to purchase a rice cooker and to cut back I have my first appt. with Dr. Robert Kushner at Northwestern’s Wellness Group 01/30/07. I’ve read a lot about his WL approaches; he’s written a book on WL - his Northwestern profile list his areas of interests as: Nutrition/Diet Counseling, Obesity, Weight Loss/Management. They have sent me paperwork to turn in for my initial visit. They ask you to ensure your Insurance will cover visits w/Registered Dietician & Health Psycologists. The receptionists says I'll have to attend 4 classes (1 month apart). I began an excel spreadsheet listing all weight loss attempts since 2000. This is my first time being at 40 BMI, therefore, I won’t have medical documentation to show 5 yrs of 40 BMI. Almost all previous doctor’s appt., have recorded the times after I’ve lost weight. I’ve never been under a supervised diet. I began this week documenting EVERYTHING I can remember & will from this point on, because I have a fear of dealing with my Aetna Open Access HMO. Since 2000, I’ve been on slim fast, medifast, WW x2, south beach, nutrisystem. I know HOW to lose weight… haven’t learned how to keep it off. So, if things don’t work out with getting approval for WLS {I’ll be completed crushed}, yet I’ll be ready to work with the Wellness Center on to assist me w/losing & learning to keep it off (hopefully). Currently, I’m not diagnosed with anything. I’ve had a hysto surgery in 2000; Vag. Prolapse surgery in 2004 & hemmie surgey in 2006. I snore so loud that I wake myself up – so, I wouldn’t be surprised if I actually have sleep apnea. Both my sisters have been are diagnosed. Please wish me luck and give me any / all advice possible. Thank you! |

| Hello & Thank you for all of the greetings! I'm on the line cancelling my appt. for tomorrow - since Aetna just told me that they will not pay for a dietetian unless you are diabetic. Before I cancel - I'll ask Northwestern to quote me price on the seeing the dietitian. Continued Success to all today! |

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | One piece of advice something I've learned the hard way. Most ins. companies will not accept your version of keeping track of weight loss attempts. It must be umbrelled under a doctor or a program like Jenny Craig, WWs, medifast, etc. HTH!

| Hello NFaith2Loose, Welcome to our forum. It's very nice to be able to talk to people and talk about our different situations related to our overweight problems. I have an HMO too. I know it doesn't cover the surgery but I made the phone call to Avmed anyways and try to speak to someone to let me know if there was any possibility in that If I have health related issues, would they cover me for the GBS. I was told that that my PCP has to be the one to send Avmed themselves a letter determining the health issues that I have now. I'm already a diabetic. I have poor circultation, sleep apnea, breathing problems while I walk fast or go up the stairs, no menstruation because I'm insulin resistance, High blood pressure, High cholesterol, High triglycerides and water retention. The only thing good I have is my heart. Thank God for that!!! My BMI is 49. I have an appointment with my Pulmonologist on Feb. 2nd. And, I've already gone to a group session with my surgeon. Got alot of feed back. I also have an appointment with my surgeon on Mar. 6th for the first time after the group session. Before that day, I must have letters from my other doctors explaining why I need to GBS. So, if you have HMO and you have health issues, you'll probably have a chance for them to cover it. I mean it's worth the try. Don't give up, there's always light at the end of the tunnel. Leyva29
