Hi everyone, I'm new here. I just wanted to tell a little about my story.
Why surgery? I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes at 28 yrs.old. I became pregnant with my daughter at 30 and needed insulin from that point on. I am now 41. I hated the thought of possibly having my daughter wake up to find me in the morning because of a low blood sugar. Too much responsibility for a little one. They tell me that many people with diabetes end up not needed meds after surgery. They told me that dialysis was in my not so distant future So.......
Surgery: Monday, March first,2010. New month, new week, new life??? Always complicated.... ICU on Wednesday due to ketoacidosis.

Out of the ICU on Saturday. Cool freaking out the ICU nurses. I was the only ICU patient who still needed to walk every four hours. Shift change can be fun when they see you getting out of bed. Home on Monday. Back in ICU next Sunday. (UTI leads to dehydration) Home on Wednesday and good since then.
What now? (5months later) started out at 226lbs. I am now at 156. I was on 1500 mgs of metformin daily. I am now off it completely. I was on Lantus twice a day (18 units in am and 22 in the pm). I am now on 7 units twice a day. I was on Humalog three times a day (10, 12,and 15 units) I now take 7 units three times a day.
What has helped?
*sugar free orange popsicles
*great ICU nurses (one who had the same surgery)
*chobani greek yougurt (14 g protein in 6 oz)
*supportive family
*a great surgeon who cancelled 38 other appointments so he could stay by me until I was "out of the woods"
What has not helped?
*hamburger

*a less than understanding boss
Something to keep in mind: Every day do at least one thing that is purely for your own joy/health. You deserve it.
