| My first post: Pouch and SUrgery Concerns
Aloha, I am now 7 days out of surgery. It was my 3rd abdominal surgery so the pain was gone day 3 then they sent me home. I took painkillers the first 2 days but now I don’t need them, so for the record I feel like all is well.
My concerns are my food intake. I did not go into this blindly, I researched everything, learned about the pouch sizes and the feelings and all of that good stuff. So after I did my leak test and started to drink my 4 ounces of broth, crystal light and Jell-O I noticed that I was not getting a full feeling. I asked my doc before I left the hospital if my pouch was 4 ounces, which he assured me it was. The weird part is that I feel like I can eat 6-8 ounces of fluid. I have been living off of broths and cream soups strained along with protein powder and crystal light and I don’t feel nausea or weak. I feel like I can eat 4 ounces of broth and then 3-4 more ounces of something else and I do not get the full feeling.
I do not know if it is in my head or if I am so used to overstuffing myself that I lost the ability to feel full but I am a little worried that something is wrong. I DO NOT EAT 8 OUNCES AT A TIME, I just feel like I can and the only thing that is stopping me is my mind telling me that I don’t want to get sick. I will hopefully go on purred foods soon tomorrow or the next day and I want to ensure that I am alright. I am also loosing 1.5-2 pounds a day, this morning I was 3 pounds lighter, I am about 12-15 pounds lighter 7 days after surgery.
Please let me know if anyone else had this or if it is normal.
Thanks!

Aloha! Wish I were there.
The stoma (hole) at the bottom of your pouch is wide open, so when you drink broths and soups, some of it is passing straight throught he pouch and into the intestines, allowing you to eat more. You won't start feeling fullness until you start on more solid foods, even purees might not give you the full feeling. Also, the full feeling is going to be different that what you have been used to. You aren't going to get that "Thanksgiving Day ate too much" stuffed feeling, it's a much more subtle feeling of "no more room", LOL literally FULL. If you try to swallow the next bite anyway, it's most likely to come right back up. This is one of the reasons we coach everyone to eat slowly and take tiny bites, because that full feeling sneaks up on you and you don't want to be swallowing a mouthful when you finally get the signal.

Welcome to the board, thank you for joining us.
Congratulations on joining the Losers' Bench.
(((((HUGS))))) May your journey go well.
In addition to the explanation NQBarbie gave you, the surgery has cut some of your nerves that relay signals to your brain. They will eventually feel, but early out, your brain may very well not be getting the same signals as pre op, and your perception will be different.
What you are feeling right now, is, in every way quite normal, and what most post ops feel and go through. Just give your pouch the TLC it needs, and it will help you.

Even thou u r so well prepared....I found, the head part in all of this was the hardest. It took me a good 6 months to wrap my head around the food intake part. I wish I could tell u when it clicked but the truth is.....it just takes a long time to adjust to all the changes. It is so far from anything I had ever know that I had/having to relearn life as I knew it. I am not sure my perceptions of food, life and health were ever correct. I am not sure they r now...lol. Just try to relax and do exactly what the doctor says. Allow you self to feel what u r feeling and look for new ways to cope withthe fear and anxiouty that this new life will bring you. It is a trip.....but.......well worth the ride!
Best of luck and wishes to u!

Thank you all for the information. The fact that the one side of my stomach is open and all fluids drain out fast makes sense. When I had the leak test done I watched the images and once I swallowed the fluid I saw it go into a little area and start to drain auto. I could see it go down through my system so it makes sense. When I asked my surgeon and other staff they all repeated that it was 4 ounces and to eat slow.
So if I chug 6 ounces of water can that stretch the pouch? I drink alt of fluids and it is hard drinking so spread out and so little.

Sorry I did not mean chug as in downing a beer,i meant it as in drink fast. So instead of drinking that 6 once glass over 30 minutes is would drink it over 5 minutes instead. That kind of chug, our chug.
Thank you
