Hi ... i am new here and am not sure what to do however, i am wanting to obtain more information on getting the surgery under the OHIP insurance. Can you direct me to what is needed to qualify for the surgery? My BMI is 52.6 and I weigh 326 lbs... UUGH

Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery. Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.  |

Welcome to the board, thank you for joining us. I have taken the liberty of splitting your post and setting up a new thread here, as the orginal thread you posted is a rather old thread. The basic criteria for surgery in the US is set by NIH. Criteria for WLS Surgery. I imagine, the criteria in Canada is basically the same. The best way to find out would be to contact OHIP and ask, or consult your PCP. ((((((HUGS)))))) May your journey go well.

Hi: I'm from Chatham Ontario and I had my surgery in Ypsilanti, Michigan on Jan 10/07. The day I went to meet with the dietician before the surgery there was 5 women there - all Canadian. In my case the clinic gave me the OHIP forms - I had my own doctor authorize them after I filled them out. At first OHIP wanted more information on why I needed the surgery - my doctor revised the application putting hypertension and knee and back pain. They authorized the surgery within a month. I startedlooking into the surgery in Sept. and had my surgery in Jan. If I can help with more information let me know. Garda.

taz, I just want to welcome you. WLS was one of the successful decisions I have ever made in my life!! I bought a new healthy, happy life for me. I'm now +11 months out and if I look at myself one year ago I would see a miserable woman who no longer exist anymore! I don't know why I haven't thought of this procedure before! Thank you for the information... interesting connection here i was born in Chatham Ontario... I am unsure if you went to your family doctor first or approached the michigan clinic on your own. I am seeing my family doctor tomorrow and find I am very anxious about this. I find myself unable to go out into public these days... thanks for your help
